Like whenever someone posts a picture of someone "fit", they always have visible abs, may or may not have big arms, and absolutely every other muscle on their body is totally ignored. A few years back, I used to do 400 push-ups a day, and I looked like a Greek god. I took a load of pictures, and I still post them on here regularly and get told that I have an amazing body. The thing is, I have a really ugly face. Asymmetrical and everything. When I was doing 400 push-ups a day, I knew I still wasn't gonna get any pussy, as a good body can't make up for an ugly face. I have a manly face with a thick jaw and everything, I just look like Quasimodo.

I wish I had the motivation in me to do some serious working out.

That's why you supplement with lifting.

(Loosely): If you eat more than your energy expenditure, you will gain weight. If you eat less, you will lose weight.

If you sit on your ass, your body will tend to store energy in fat. If you lift, your body will tend to put that energy towards muscle instead.

So if you eat less than you burn, do some cardio, and do some resistance training - you will lose weight but your body will preferentially "burn" fat.

If you eat more than you burn and you lift, you'll gain weight but it will be mostly muscle

etc.

That's why bodybuilders go on a bulk/cut cycle - gain weight (mostly muscle, but some fat), and then cut and lose fat to minimize body fat percentage.

Been active my entire life, although never got into actual free weights.

Now training for a sub-40 10k and doing some callisthenics in between.

I found that running is by far the best way to deal with depression.

Ice Cream Fitness. I heard it's a good plan for hypertrophy (my goal) and better than stuff like Starting Strength and SL5x5. I haven't done most of the exercises before but they have videos and I feel confident I can learn with practice after I get the weights dialed in. Currently I've been doing some bullshit in a shitty gym like curling dumbbells, smith machine chest press, situps, pushups, etc, but in 15 minutes I'm going to a local gym to sign up and get started on ICF. Pretty excited.

I'm 5'10" and 148lbs, waist is 28" probably, my goal is just to increase muscle size as fast as possible. I'm doing IIFYM for diet, aiming for 130-150 g protein per day. I have a strong cardio history as well, I run about 10 miles every other day but I'm going to back that way off to try and focus on gaining mass.

Any feedback? Thanks for the tips, I appreciate advice.

Being fat actually helps you bench more. So if you're struggling at 1pl8, you have very little body fat and you're also weak as shit. You should do dips instead, as fat won't help you with dips, you'll know all the strength and weight you're accumulating is from muscle, not fat. Still, 1pl8 does not require much body fat percentage. I'm guessing you're a lanklet?

Not how it works man, abs are just a measure of bodyfat percentage. That's why giant powerlifters who have insane core strength won't always have them, but swimmers, who's sport is entirely cardiovascular, will always have them.
