I can't see headsets providing the ultimate VR experience. With smells etc I think the only option is to trigger the brain itself, possibly via electric stimulation of pre-identified areas to match perceived phenomena in the virtual world. I don't think this stuff has to be clunky, and I don't think Ready Player One-eque costumes (gloves etc) will really be the end point of VR. I really think this will be the biggest change in human culture since the internet at least, possibly since the dawn of consciousness.

I have read a couple of books from early VR pioneers (Michael Heim et al.) and have been researching the more technical aspects and problems developers are currently facing (tracking latency and the sort of stuff that seems very solvable). I really am convinced (perhaps as a consequence of my need to be convinced about something or due to my isolation and personal appeal) that VR will totally change culture. Practically speaking it'll start with healthcare, professional training and so on, but I think the endgame of VR is a self-exile to one's own private, self-constructed solipsistic universe. I realize the average person does not have skills to do even the most rudimentary coding / programming to achieve this, though I'm looking into ways this might be feasible at some point. To be honest I'm currently researching for a novel I'm hoping to write (if only for personal satisfaction) about a group of young men who essentially leave society and form something of a technological brotherhood (based on the Trappist monastic brotherhoods) and who move to an abandoned monastery in order to develop underground / black market Virtual Realities (the type banned by the government) to make enough money to cover utilities and gear while gradually working on the ultimate VR project (which will be the title, but I don't it to be googleable) in which people can essentially choose to leave the so-called Real World (which, when deconstructed, appears like a shared server in which we have all spawned) and instead exist in their own private reality / server as described above. These young men tend to be unemployed, depressed or out of place in the type of culture I depict (the logical progression of the current culture of extreme individuality in which value corresponds to economic productivity and erotic potential). But I don't want to be naive or too sci-fi, or stray too far from what's plausible.
