I mainly study in Norse and first hand sources in the original languages, where there is scarcely ever mention of such things as "thraells" especially as Scandinavians before Christianity did not keep slaves. Scandinavia only became famous for slavery after Christianity, because pagans were permitted to be taken as slaves but not Christians, and it was the most pagan part of Europe. Maybe you should expand your reading outside of English language, and read about Scandinavians in a Scandinavian language where you have more of an actual body of literature to read about and where important words do not lose their meanings in translation. Though you do not sound like you really have any interest in them if you are just talking about pagan demons and Byzantium. Vaeringjar were mainly traders.
