>Catholic religion so you have a strong guilt incentive to follow through when you make promises like NoFap, but also not unbearably fundamentalist since it's more of a cultural thing (Virgin of Guadalupe, patron mother of Mexico, Rosca de Reyes, comfy prayers etc.) than some stiff religious creed that you're ostracized if you don't follow all tenets to the letter like those weird people that go to isolated camps, mega-churches or Scientology-tier shit (or at least, that's my impression among the mexicanos I've ever known, we pretty chill desu)

This is absolutely true. Actually, it goes beyond that. In this part of the world you are Chad or you are trash. I'm in Worst Korea and it's the same here as it is there.
What's crazy is that society here has expectations that men should both be incredibly successful AND conformist. So not only are people expected to be successful, but trying to become so in an unorthodox way is deeply, deeply frowned upon until it actually bears fruit.
So you have practically a whole country of people trying to get into the same three universities and get high-paying jobs at the same handful of corporations. It's unreal.
