How do you stop being friends with someone and hurt them as little as possible?

I've got this friend who is actually a pretty nice guy, but he's got other shit qualities to him that I hate. He's super pessimistic, always whines and complains over the smallest problems. He always has to yap about things that no one else cares about, and never stops. He is also pretty "childish" to put it that way, and embarrasses himself way too often that I don't even wanna be seen with him.

He's a sensitive dude and going through depression and stuff, and I wanna call it quits in a way that I will hurt his feelings as little as possible, but how
