I'd like to know what you guys do in your freetime. maybe we can share experiences and learn about new activities to do.

I enjoy drawing birds and playing piano. My favorite birds to draw are passerine birds, because they are small and cute.

Also, I am a cute girl so no one makes fun of my hobbies.

Hobbies are my life.

I study physics, theology, practice Zen meditation, play video games (mostly competitive arena shooters and CRPGs), study Japanese, and occasionally read novels (mostly classical and postmodern).

Basically, these are the same hobbies that an 18-year-old would have in the late 90's and early 2000's. But I'm now 31, so I've gotten pretty fucking good at most of these. I've just never dropped them.

It is a hobby when you're a lawyer working 60 hours per week, and your job has absolutely nothing to do with theology or physics. Then it is a hobby.

Sorry, bro, but not all of us are undergrads taking gen ed requirements.

>>25267826
I barely have any idea what you're saying. Work on your communication skills, friend.

Anyway, I read undergrad and graduate-level physics texts and do the problem sets. For example, a few years ago I completed Jackson's "Electrodynamics," and I'm currently working through the Feynman lectures. I do not simply read mass-produced books by Hawking, etc.

Any more criticisms?

Great resource. As for what it's like...

I walk around and scavenge copper off of people's electronics. I cut the copper out of the wires, and then I wind it into a spring, clip rings off of it, sand off the burrs, and then knit them together. If I wanted to make an armor grade piece, I would have to flatten them, pierce a hole in the overlap, and rivet them shut.

It's very time consuming, and it's a lot like knitting, but with metal. Also, it gives me a way to make some extra cash because I'm a dirty hobo

unless youre a really quick learner and have a lot of energy dont bother with violin. itll be like a month of regular practice before you can even bow a note

I can tell you're flat because you saved that image to your pc. I just know

>>
>>25268063
Wish I did something productive when I was 10 instead of playing vidya.
How does it pay? Is it a meme that musicians are poor?
>>
>>25268144

bowing straight is really difficult even if you practice in a mirror. youll get a lot of squeaks and squacks and terrible sounding notes

vibrato is really weird and difficult too even if your left hand dexterity from guitar transfers over

getting notes correct isnt all that hard if you practice with a tuner and use your ears

violin is something that kids can learn to get good but i dont know if adults can unless they have some burning passion. you cantj ust pick it up and learn stuff real quick like guitar, you wont be able to even bow a note that doesnt sound like shit for awhile
>>
>>25267934
Well i spent 2 years in a geology degree so i started liking it there. Whenever we had field trips, i collected small samples of rocks and crystals (boring stuff like Mica/quartz/basalts/granites aswell as fossils (really dig those too) I also attend the annual mineral showroom and buy some prettier stuff there (expensive, so i only have a couple of exquisite ones)

I'm in southern europe, but i heard that in some places in america you have DESIGNATED quarrels or smt where you can go dig up Opals, tourmalines and other cool things
>>
>>25268183

oh yeah this is coming from a guitar player who got a violin. i still suck ass but i dont have adderall anymore so i cant practice or do anything for that matter

also dont buy retarded 90$ violins on amazon. the first one i got was literally unplayable because neck was fucked up when it was manufactured so that high notes on the D and A string could not possibly be bowed. that is, if you actually wanna still buy one anyway. it'll take you a longggggggggggggg time before you can play anything probably. it's not impossible for adults to learn but i think violin is something only kids can have the effort for (and lack of reward because youll suck ass for 10 years)

if you want to pick up a classical instrument of sorts piano is probably 1/8th the difficulty of violin and there's cheat ways you can learn stuff like synthesia or whatever

this is true. The progression shown in this video is only attainable if you practice with discipline every day and are really dedicated. EVen then I'd say few would be able to make this good progress in only two years.

Supply and demand. If you are a good musician on an instrument that is in demand, you will be able to make a living. If you are willing to work as a teacher, you will make a living. If you are willing to play gigs that are boring (weddings, funerals, corporate parties etc.) you will make a living. Only musicians who are mediocre on an over saturated instrument (read: guitarists,, pianists, violinists and female pop singers) who refuse to work as a teacher, end up poor. To make a living, you either must be willing to teach, or you have to play an instrument that is in demand, or you have to be exceptionally good - better than everyone else. The "a music degree is a waste of time and money" depends on these factors. It's mostly correct to quote: "If you're in doubt of whether you can make it as a musician, you won't make it."
>>
I genuinely don't do anything beyond video games and watching movies, and even then I don't do much of either of those. I have OCD which makes me really anxious about doing stuff that I should enjoy. So for example, I start watching a movie, I start panicking about if my room is tidy enough for this, if I am in the right mental state for this, if I'm actually enjoying it, lots of doubts and questions like that. I usually give up on whatever I'm doing 10 minutes in because the doubts become too much. So yeah, I don't do anything in my life besides work and 4chan. It's fucking misery.

The usual. Video games, browsing imageboards, anime, movies...
I also play guitar. Sometimes I exercise, sometimes draw. I have a bunch of talents so if I feel like it I'll do something new. Also smoke tobacco and weed almost daily.

I sell shit on the internet sometimes. That allows me to kill some time, go outside, interact with people, get rid of shit I don't need and make money. It's pretty productive.
>>
>>25268447
>if I am in the right mental state for this, if I'm actually enjoying it
I have this too. Constant doubt if I should enjoy it or be critical, if I actually understand the meaning etc. Those thoughts make it hard to watch anything besides anime which is usually too dumb to dig deeply into.
Didn't know it was a part of OCD. I'm starting to believe I might actually have it.
>>
>>25268468
Everyone can draw, you just need to practice. Don't give up!

You definitely could, although I personally find great value in my degree. Here's what it gave me:
>university provided me with three practice pupils; two children and one adult
>mentor teacher with 20+ years of experience teaching kids and adults gave weekly lectures to me and the other piano teacher students
>came to observe my lessons every second week and gave feedback
>this is a crucial part of becoming a good teacher; have others observe your teaching methods and discuss their effectiveness, not to mention your behavior towards students and how they respond
>also had psychology, music pedagogy and didactic lectures (what does it mean to "learn music"? What does it mean to "teach music"? How can I best facilitate the learning of music in my lessons?)
>also forced to write a 15 page essay on a self chosen topic, which I recommend every scholar simply because of "scholarly hygiene" in lack of better terms

It's in C-sharp minor, allegro, common time. Sonata form. If it will sound how I imagine it (midi files can't compare to human performance) then it's very dramatic, it ends very darkly. I tried to make each instrument part interesting and more than just accompiment for the first violin, but this is my first time writing for an einsemble. The second movement is in E major, 2/4 time, an andante in ternary form. The third movement is a waltz in F-sharp minor

Not exactly the same as writing a string quartet, now is it? ;:^)

>>25269321

Sounds like something I'd like anon. Making the third movement a waltz...that's interesting. Isn't it usually a minuet/trio?

You should give up on these smoothies, I'll tell you that. Have you taken a walk today? If not I'd advise you to do so, it's a great way to clear the mind.

Yeah it's usually a minuet or a scherzo, but sometimes it's a waltz (like in Tchaikovsky symphony 5), I had heard the waltz from Dvoraks serenade for strings and I really liked it so I wrote it inspired by that

>Dvorak
My nigga. I haven't listened to him in a long time but I always liked his quartets/piano concertos. This Serenade is really nice, too.

Godspeed on that last movement anon, hopefully you'll post it somewhere when it's done and probably copyright it before you do that too

Thanks, I don't think I could get it published or would otherwise have to copyright it though, at most I would hope to get an amateur group together to perform it. The theater I'm working at also does music lessons and I talked with the owner briefly about doing just that, so maybe some day
