Just show you are very grateful for your gift. At least then, you are the pleasant, nice, person who is too lazy/forgets to give cards.

give a card and day something along the lines of "I thought the card would get lost in the post if I sent it before Christmas, and I knew I would be seeing you soon". Also, if possible get a small token gift at a nearby store.
