Because it so easy to scan for them. If you simply type in "sudo rm -rf /" into the terminal, then it'll automatically cleanse your system of viruses.

It gets old really fast. I ran Arch on everything I owned from like 2006 - 2012 or so. They kept breaking shit with these totally arbitrary sweeping changes, so you'd have to like, set a night aside before you could pacman -Syu, so you could adjust for whatever random thing ArchGodX decided he didn't like while sitting on the toilet. Linux is chaos at the whim of mega-autists who mostly hate their users. It's a pain in the ass. (And yes I know there are "stable" alternatives, which is code for, "old as fuck," and therefore come with their own pile of ass pains.)

IIRC the final straw for me was then they moved /var/lib to /usr/lib or something like that, for no fucking reason. Updating was a huge cock punch, and even after I got it to complete, it broke everything that was dependent on 32-bit libraries (which shouldn't even be a thing anyway). So there went more hours of my life.

Closed source, stable OS developed by professional developers backed by lots of money > chaotic pile of ancient spaghetti and duct tape, maintained by hobbyists who make random changes and abandon their projects.
>>
Why not just use OSX? Isn't that a 'best of both worlds' scenario?

Robust permission system. On Windows, viewing a file and executing its contents are the same thing. On Linux, you have to specifically give files permission to execute, so it's not likely to happen accidentally.

Also, the user system was designed to give individual accounts minimal privileges to access sensitive shit (this is inherited from Unix systems at universities in the 70s). This is in contrast to Windows, which began as single user systems and had multiuser stuff bolted on later.

Linux also stores your password in a way that's actually secure, rather than Windows's backwards compatible nightmare.

And also most people don't use Linux. When they do use it, it's for a server, so vulnerabilities and virus potential are a whole different story if you have externally listening services like webservers. For a personal PC you'll be safe.
>>
>>25262338 Oh, and this >>25261591 is also a big factor. Instead of looking for dodgy adware-ridden installers for programs you need online as you would with Windows, you can find most everything you need in official repositories.

It's a little like all your software comes from Steam: no installers and no bundled spyware.

Linux is inherently and intended to be viral in order to be free. Look up GPL

So in short, Linux IS a virus. But it's a beneficial virus.
>>
I used Ubuntu/Kubuntu at work, I use Ubuntu/Mint/Xubuntu in VMs when working on personal projects.

I've used some "cloud" ubuntu variant in the past on my netbook, and puppy when booting from a usb on otherwise locked systems.

I use gui-less VMs occasionally just to connect to them from windows and get a linux command line.

I frequently do some configuring for whatever development task I'm doing, but I'm still not entirely comfortable doing anything wihtout googling.

I hope to get a free mac when I get a job, and see how OS X is.
