/university/

about to start first semester this spring, starting at College Algebra 1 for an electrical engineering major. I'm taking it nice and slow.

>college algebra
>slow

I'll say. You're a fucking tortoise, famiglia
>>
Should I study philosophy? It's the only thing I care about besides literature.

>algebra
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
YOU'RE GONNA GET FUCKED IN CALC M8

>start at college algebra 1
>get three spots for required elective class
>summer semester
>take college algebra 2/trigonometry
>get two spots for required electives
>fall 16' comes around
>no electives bloating your schedule while i'm taking calculus/physics/chemistry
>for the entire major, have 12 credit semesters instead of the 15-17 your peers are having
>get two full semesters to review math at a college level, as well as figure out how to study, get used to university etc

It's a good idea if you think. As long as you have the money to pay for the semesters, there is no downside.

Do you want to go to law school?
>if yes
go ahead, something like 95% of philo majors are pre-law
>if no
You shouldn't as you'll be wasting your time and money.

Depends. Like the other guy said, it doesn't make so much sense if you aren't planning to study philosophy as a living, specifically in the manner that requires a degree in it. Even then, if you're into continental philosophy (as opposed to analytic) you're slightly fucked if you're in the UK or North America.

Talk to professors and see what's available. If you're lucky, your uni might have like one single continental philosopher position in the department. If not, you might want to consider going into another field and then using philosophy the way you like (comp lit people do it, and I do it in my own field).

If you aren't planning to go to postgrad and ultimately try for academia, I would be wary of it. I hate to be cynical, but if you're going to college to guarantee an upper middle class income for yourself and your future family, there are better options. I would only recommend academia if you have the passion to sustain a lifelong interest and don't care about money, and I would only recommend undergrad majoring in phil if you are planning on postgrad (or one of its practical applications, like law or middle management or whatever).

People too often confuse a college degree for knowledge. Every single person in my major knew nothing about my field or its history by the time they graduated, some with honors and accolades. College is a ride that moves steadily to the end and you try not to fail out on the way. Getting a philosophy degree does not mean you are now A Philosopher or even that you Know Philosophy. Be very sure of your own passion if you intend to specialise like this. Look carefully around you and you'll notice that all the "lol i study lit because i like it i guess :/" girls can afford not to care, because daddy will bail them out and they have jobs lined up through family connections after graduation. If that's not you, you have to look at college very consciously in terms of what you want from it, and where you're going in life.
