It's a combination of radioactive material and structural metal that melted through the floor of the Chernobyl reactor and turned into that weird lump thing in the basement underneath.
It's like the most radioactive thing in the world, they had to use robots to set up a series of mirrors to even take a photo of it because cameras aren't capable of photographing it directly.
It's substantially less radioactive now than it was 30 years ago, as evidenced by the photo of the guy getting close to it, but it's still not something you'd want to get close to, and you'd be fucked without a respirator to protect you from the heavily toxic dust that's in that area.

From what I understand, it's at a level where researchers can go in with protective gear for like 5 minutes, and only do it once a year because they hit their yearly safe maximum dose limit in that time.

So I just read up on this. 10 years after the accident, it had already dropped to a level where you'd have to spend close to 10 minutes in proximity to it before feeling serious symptoms. Now that it's been close to 30 years, and if I'm understanding the science right and doing the math correctly, the radiation should now have dropped to a level where you'd have to sit on top of the thing for an hour to get sick.
The much more serious hazard, as I mentioned earlier, is dust. External radiation falls off quickly with short distances and is much less hazardous than people tend to imagine, but if you inhale contaminated dust, it gets absorbed into your blood and body much more effectively and will fuck you two ways from sunday.

It literally fucks your dna when you get close to it. Actually staying around something like that would probably kill you really fast. The following is just my guess from watching the documentary on it.
1st - They fall over and probably blackout (if they don't have a respirator toxins in the air would start quickly eating away at their lungs)
2nd - Their skin starts falling off (look up the pictures of crews that actually go into or did clean up on nuclear facilities)
3rd - If they stay near the foot they'd probably die really quickly, if they leave even after being exposed to it for a short period of time they'd probably still die, but it would be agonizing (multiple system failure, critical loss of skin, bodys inability to repair itself due to dna being broken down)

It's my favourite documentary of all time, it's a recreation of the accident based on the diaries of Valery Legasov (played by Ade Edmonson) who investigated the disaster and had his findings suppressed by the Soviet Union until he killed himself.
