Grand Strategy is just a term made by Paradox Development Studio to market their own brand of historical strategy games, specifically the Crusader Kings, Europa Universals, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron series. They do tend to be much more complex than your average strategy game, but not to the extent that >>25216291 claims. They're all based on historical settings so the games are pretty easy mode despite the complexity if you just pick a nation that was historically powerful like France. The real difficulty comes in when you try to turn some shithole like Kongo into a world power.
Still, they're fun and I recommend checking them out for any fans of history or strategy games. I'd recommend that a newcomer pick up either Europa Univeralis 4 or Crusader Kings 2 as their first entry into the genre, as they have the simplest and easiest mechanics. Be warned that Paradox tends to be massively exploitative with their DLC policy though - often the base game lacks a ton of important features, so I'd reccomend just buying the base game on Steam so that you can enjoy multiplayer and workshop mods, and then pirating all the DLC (you can find them at the grand strategy general on /vg/ )

Well, I don't know you, so I can't really confirm or deny that, but these games do have a lot of time where you're not really actively doing anything and instead just waiting for a cooldown or monitoring your economy or something while time passes, especially in Europa Universals 4 and Victoria 2.
Crusader Kings 2 and Hearts of Iron 3 don't really have this problem, though, so if you're worried about a lack of patience or something I'd suggest those. Crusader Kings 2 takes place on a smaller scale than the other games which means near-constant events happening so you almost always have something to do, and Hearts of Iron 3 is all about WW2, so you have a lot more action and less sitting around doing nothing due to being at war for 90% of the game.
Really though, I'd just suggest that you pirate one of them and try it out to see if you like it. You can find any of the games at the grand strategy general on /vg/ very easily.
