I've been watching this one too. My opinion about Umaru's popularity stems from the following. She has a split personality of otaku/popular girl. Therefore, she appeals to viewers from 2 different (opposing?) shojo demographics who may be enjoying the program.
The first is popular girls. The second, is gamer/otaku girls. Usually there's separate titles for each group, but Umaru has appeal to both.
Another example of this kind of character, would be Konata from Lucky Star. Hope that helps.
