So Lucas agreed to a pay cut to the DGA minimum, despite being a relatively big name by that time, in exchange for the merchandising rights and future sequel rights to Star Wars. The execs gladly handed them over, thinking the movie would never do well enough for either of those two conceits to mean anything.
