I stayed at my grandparents house so I didnt have to worry about paying bills but I did have to pay for my own food so I got a job at a lawsons right down the street and I hated every single moment.

Ik now two girls and a guy that have been living there for years, one got in by applying for a PhD and looks forward to get a job lined up soon, the girls both got some job in Jap companies that eventually demanded they move full time to nipland. I've visited a few times and have a whole bunch of Japanese otaku friends over there. I met a few of them who came here for conventions and then they introduced me to their friends over there.
Anyway, Japanese otaku are really chill once they figure out that you're on their level and not just a clueless weeaboo. It was interesting to watch my friend's friends attitudes change from "oh god, one of these guys" to total bro as soon as it became clear that we could have actual conversations about the currently popular anime and games they actually cared about.
Also, I traveled around Japan alone for a while, and my experience is that younger Japanese people are very friendly and welcoming to normal tourists (as long as you hide your power level), and I was always able to find people to hang out and drink with at bars and the like, but their attitudes are completely different if you actually try to live there or take their women.
