There are more teenagers on this board today than at any point in the board's long history. r9k has been jockeying with /mu/ for one the lowest average board ages not named /b/ ever since "NORMIES" took off with the reddit crowd.
Nobody wants to contribute with original thoughtful greentext stories when it'll just be drowned out under a deluge of teenaged angst and recycled shitposts. r9k, since it has never had a defined topic, relied on self moderation to control content. The influx of new posters from the past several years who never had any conception of what 'board quality' looked like quickly overran everyone else who did.

It's because most of the people on this board don't remember what it was like before it was made.
When r9k was created the people who came to it did so because they were tired of the endless flippant memes and recycled content of /b/. r9k was a place to get away from that. Those original posters knew exactly what they DIDNT want r9k to be. They were dedicated, to a certain degree, of regulating content with their own posts. They would ignore obvious /b/ shitposters or sage them and let them 404. They upheld quality by bumping interesting and thoughtful threads. There was a conception... as least there was for me and I suspect many others, that /r9k/ was like a HOME board on 4chan, and was treated as such by its arcanine inhabitants.
When r9k became to be seen as a 'meme factory' and the internet wide preoccupation with "dank memes" centered on 'pepe' and 'normies', the board was flooded with people who never knew what r9k was like before that time. They didn't come to r9k to get away from /b/, as far as they were concerned, r9k WAS /b/. It was the wacky random board that had fresh internet jokes they could share on twitter and with their friends from highschool. It was internet cred to them.
The present day nu-r9k doesn't have that feeling of solidarity when it was born. At least it doesn't to me.
