I don't get a chance to watch much in the way of films or television nowadays, so I think I'm hopelessly out of date there.
Books - I'm on firmer footing. I'm rather hopeless when it comes to grand, generation spanning sagas - stuff like Buddenbrooks, Sound and the Fury, A Scots Quair. There is a thread of fate and tragedy that often runs through these things, the power of destiny - all very much against the grain of reason, but immersive nonetheless.
The last book in particular is important - Edinburgh is such a literary city, and there's such a wealth of modern Scottish literature to enjoy, many stories of which have some sort of genesis in Edinburgh. Stuff like The Drinking Well, or The Cone Gatherers. I'd be interested in learning more about distinctive national literature, if you have any suggestions.
Other than that, and I guess related to the first part, is a love for historical fiction. Memoirs of Hadrian is probably my most favourite read, followed by Augustus.
