they just convey emotion a lot better than text and emoticons are hard to save/type

I'm ambivalent towards emojis.
At face value they're just the modern incarnation of those funny little text faces we made back when he were just starting to use the internet. Like boxing kirby Q(o_oQ). They're frivolous and flirty and all in good fun. A smiley laughing face can be more visceral than typing "haha" or "lol"
On the other hand I feel like they make any sincere interaction through social media almost impossible by substituting genuine conversation with trite standardized memes. I think it might actually make people dumber by stultifying their capacity for articulation being so used to have their thoughts be conveyed for them by digital symbols.
I just wish social media didn't act as a barrier to genuine expression. I hate the modern phenomenon of standardized 'irony' and 'post irony' where everyone is so apprehensive about being sincere.
