I know a lot of people who are much more talented than me but not nearly as successful because they don't put anything out and they only work on things part time. I'm actually not very good. I struggle with proportion and for a long time lazily bypassed that by going for abstraction or stylized primitivism.
Having a bold aesthetic is more important than being technically good and anyone can develop a singular aesthetic if you put the time in. And frankly anyone can develop impressive technical skill if they put the time in; I hit a wall with technique because I am lazy and impatient and IMO it's better to sell a failure than sit at home trying to make something perfect. So I make failures then hustle the shit out of them.
I'm not very good at drawing or painting and for the installation shit, I've only learned how to edit and composite video in the last year or so. But all I do like 10 hours a day is work on art and try to hustle. Get to college, sit down with guidance counselor, tell her I want to teach. She's like, that's not a good job for someone like you, tries to push me into something else.

Eventually, the weeks turned into a month, and the month into months. No place called me: I began to apply in things outside my field. I began applying for menial shit, and even so, I couldn't get hired. Eight months after it had all begun, I got a job. Not because of my skills: no, not at all. I got one because my father had talked to a friend of his. But the job itself? Menial shit, paying $9.30 an hour. Doing dead-end tasks: archiving files, transcribing data onto a spreadsheet.
I've been at that job for four months now. Every day, I keep applying for jobs in what I want. But I get rejected from everything. The way things are going, I'm never going to be independent. I still live with my parents, and I want to move out every single day. But the wage I earn is too little.
I really hate my life.

I started out as a lowly computer handyman for someone's garage business. Of course the actual title was some grandiose bullshit, but that's all my actual job boiled down to, completing random tasks related to fixing computers and websites. I started at a measly $12/hour. The shuttle drivers made more than me.
My boss from that job referred me to someone he knew who needed a programmer and now I get paid around $50/hour. I'm probably the highest paid person in my major holding a conventional job.
