I didn't smoke much since it was inconvenient, and I tapered off of dipping towards the end since it was a hassle having to reach for a bottle every minute or so. It was snus that I eventually used and abused hard. Surprisingly not to a degree which wasn't reversed by diligent brushing. I did look in the mirror one day and see a brown pit in the front of one of my teeth though, and that was a catalyst for quitting. I remember wondering where I'm going to get the money for having this drilled, when I can get it done so as not to miss class, how to get there since I didn't have a car, and then I stopped and laughed when I realized that I was freaking out over a cavity when it could and eventually would be cancer.

My mom always smoked and I never understood why. 1 weekend when I was 16 I went to my friends parents getaway cabin in the mountains and my friend lifted a pack of his dads cigarettes from his carton. My friend had smoked before and after watching his dad chainsmoke like 15 cigarettes on the drive up to the cabin I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'd already tried pills and regularly smoked weed beforehand so I knew there was more of a reason than looking cool beforehand. Okay so 5 is obviously not a super light smoker, but I'm just weighing it against the fact that most medical studies are based on at least pack-a-day smokers. So our knowledge of the affects of "lighter" smoking is limited.

Honestly, I started doing it when I became a paramedic. As an EMT working the graveyard shift I started by just having one after nasty calls, and yes, in honestly did help take the edge off. Whether that was just a psychological thing or not didn't really matter. When I went for my medic is when I started in earnest. Between the rotations, schooling, and working in EMS still it just became an easy way to calm down without just drinking all the time. Obviously I know it isn't good but it seemed to help at least a bit and that was better than nothing.

I vape super low nicotine now, but i was a pack a day user for 4 years. Um, trying to quit sucks. This shit is evil. But it feels so good. I genuinely loved smoking. There is something to be said for dip though. It's a quality buzz.
