Honestly--
If I was him, and knew that was going to happen to me, I'd want one of my buddies to finish the job and put me out of my misery. It'd be the humane thing to do, really.
What kind of father could I be? I wouldnt be able to be a role model for my kids. Wouldn't be self-sufficient and be able to provide for my family through my labor. I'd burden them with having to take care of me for the rest of my life. My wife would be completely dissatisfied, and my sons wouldn't have a strong male role model. My daughters wouldn't have a father to protect them.
Even disregarding all of that-- what kind of quality of life would I have? The constant agony and intense depression I would experience from a sudden onset disability would shake me to my core and ruin me.Kind of like being a robot.
It'd be better if I never returned from combat, for everyone. I know there's likely a code or policy against it that forced the medevac teams to keep him alive, but if I saw that I would've just ended it. Even if I got court martialed and discharged.
I would want the same done for me.
