But getting back to OP:
Yes, Lovecraft was racist, and not even "everyone was racist in those days" racist. Like, people thought he was fucking /pol/-tier in the 1920s.
Moving to New York with his (Jewish) wife had a mixed effect on Lovecraft. On some level I think leaving his comfort zone helped temper his racism through exposure. On the other hand, Lovecraft's inability to provide for his wife, having his wife provide entirely for him, his homesickness, etc. made New York an overall negative experience he may have projected onto the Slavs, blacks, and Irish about him. He does write some pretty bitter shit during this time, too.
Regardless of Lovecraft's racism, he's still a great author and one of my personal favourites.

He was both a product of his time and something else. I've read exchanges between him and Robert E. Howard, who was kinda racist but in a normal way (for a Texan living at the beginning of the 20th century), the love of Howard for Africa is more surprising than his depiction of depraved arabs and deceitful asians, which were the memes of his time.
In comparison, Lovecraft's reaction to black people seems akin to a hard case of phobia rather than a rational or cultural point of view, like those people who can't stand even the picture of a spider.
