Ok, I don't want to blogpost, but I'm trying to help out a bit:
I'd tried citalopram before fluoxetine, and didn't get on that well with it. Was on it for 5-6 months and it helped, but also made me feel too 'neutral' - wasn't getting any of myeuphorichighs, though it was knocking out the worst of the lows. Had some bad initial side-effects like noticeably more/worse nightmares, nausea, insomnia, and increased suicidal thoughts. Also have very sketchy memories of my time on them. Looking over my journals the negative reaction may have been due to the stupid amounts I was drinking as well though.
Fluoxetine had much worse initial side effects. I felt rough for nearly a fortnight, and felt rougher than I had on citalopram. I was only on it for four months, and ended up taking myself off it, again because of my frustration at it neutralising things too much. I noticed it took 4 weeks of 20mg and 2 of 40mg before it took any noticeable effect though, and more like 8 weeks in total to get the full impact. Same memory problems, but then I was drinking a hell of a lot less.
Had 6 months off anything, probably the worst of my life, now back on citalopram - have been on it for 4 weeks and am now feeling a definite boost.

I think I've been depressed for the majority of the past 7 years. I've properly attempted suicide once in that time and it was 6 years ago, I tried to hang myself in my closet but the fucking hook snapped and I ended up naked and drunk on the floor with a sore ass and a rope around my neck. I decided to not try suicide again after that Until about 4 years ago when I did a proper fool proof plan and set a date but then something came up which made me put it off and things got better briefly so I abandoned the plan all together. Since then I've put off impulsive suicide all together and have decided just to enjoy the finer things in life such as drinking, wanking and shitposting until my back is up against the wall.
There's been probably 18 months in total out of the last 7 years where I didn't feel depressed. I still have the suicidal thoughts most everyday but I keep them in check.
Anyway what I wanted to know was...
I've never bothered to go to doctor because I feel they'll probably stitch me up if I tell them I am suicidal. But more the the point, I don't see how medication could actually help? I mean, I have been depressed because I live in a shit hole council estate full of chavs where you can barely leave the house without getting in a fight. Add to that my parents are raging alcoholics. I feel pretty justified in my emotions. Getting on anti depressants is surely just dodging the issue? If they could prescribe me a million quid and a house in the Lake District that'd get me somewhere but pills just seem like 'things are shit but take these and you won't notice'/
So question is is there any actual point in going for treatment if things are justifiably as shit as you see them? I feel I'd rather see the truth as awful as it is rather than obscure it with drugs.

About to hit the sack so can't stick around, but don't worry about your doc stitching you up and getting you sectioned or anything like that. If they think you're 'functional' you're alright, and they have quite a generous understanding of that word.
Medication is an odd one, and I (the guy who wrote the long post above) have had a weird relationship with it. It's not to be treated as a 'cure' to depression, because it's not. You NEED (and I did this wrong before) some kind of talking therapy/counselling to supplement it or it's only ever a short-term crutch.

All the SSRIs do is better regulate serotonin in your system. You're not obscuring your perception really. What you need to try and do is better understand how/why you get depressed, and how you can make it happen less regularly/severely. The medication will help with that, but you really need to just try talking to people about it; be it someone professional (NHS services are decent, despite long waiting times), a friend, or someone in some experienced pastoral position (I talk to my local priest a lot, despite not being religious).
I'd strongly recommend seeing your GP though, as I can totally relate to feeling like the reality is that things are justifiably awful.

Not really, that would require rather different border policies to the UK (simply having the same policies we have now but being independent wouldn't attract any more immigrants to Scotland than already go there, except maybe 'muh heritage' Americans) which would be unlikely. They'd have to negotiate an open border type deal with us (to keep things simple for business, etc. It's in both of our interests.) and part of that would naturally be limiting how much they can change immigration policy without consulting us.
Most likely they'd get the minor changes they want (like allowing students longer work visas in Scotland or whatever) without anything that turns them into a back-door that the entire world can enter the UK through.
