What do you plan on using the car for?

What kind of roads do you expect to drive on? City, freeway, twisty mountain roads, long road trips? Do you expect to drive in the snow or off-road?

Do you want a fun car, something cushy, something bland and low-key?

Do you expect to drive mostly alone or have people in it a lot? (Probably not worth asking this on /r9k/ lol.)

Mazda3. Great car, practical and economical, well-equipped, can be had new for around your budget, and looks much less boring than other stuff like it.

Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. Go manual because CVT is garbage.

Corolla or Civic.

Common cars means lots of parts and less problems with getting any potential issues dealt with.

Not to mention automatic transmissions are mechanically much much more complex. Shut your fucking trap.

What's the main benefit of driving stick? I've never tried an auto
>>
>>25120761
Third. I've had one for a few years and I've had absolutely zero problems with it. Drives well and gets decent gas.
>>
>>25120843

better driver involvement, as well as the fact that having control over your shift timing allows you to short shift for fuel economy or shift higher for better performance

paddle shifters are just as good, don't let autists tell you otherwise
>>
>>25120859
>better driver involvement
This desu. Braking on my shiftgears has saved me from a collision a few times already. I can't imagine driving an auto, not enough control over your vehicle.
>>
>>25120843
For the vast majority of drivers these days, nothing. The only advantage is that manual transmissions are simpler and last longer than autos, but modern autos are so damn good that it's almost a non-issue.

For an enthusiast driver, the ability to choose the gear your car is in and control when it goes into that gear is critical. This is most important when driving fast on a twisty road or track, you need to be able to put the car in a lower gear to take advantage of the natural engine braking effect to slow you down as you enter a corner, and then be in the right gear to accelerate out. Most auto transmissions shift to high gears when off the throttle to keep the RPMs low and save gas, but that's the exact opposite of what you want when trying to drive fast.

Aside from that, a manual is just much more enjoyable to drive, as you're more actively involved in what the car is doing.

Is Jetta good?
>>
>>25120859
Paddle shifters are as good IF they hooked up to a good dual-clutch transmission.

The ones that many automatics have these days are laggy as fuck, and often won't let you downshift when you want to, and the earlier automated manuals (like the BMW SMG) are clunky as fuck, slow, and really rough under shifting, especially when cruising around normally. (They're better when going flat-out, largely because they're derived from race car tech.)

Jetta TDI owner here. The thing is a fucking torque machine and it's very fun. You can get the European Scirocco wheel if you want paddle shifters that play nice with the DSG. It doesn't come stock in the US but you can get them online.

Brother had a TDI. Nice car, aside from the whole emissions fiasco.

It saved his life, that that of three of his friends, when they were rear-ended by a speeding drunk driver on the freeway and spun into the concrete center divider. The car was banana-shaped, but they all walked away, with one guy slightly bruised and the rest untouched.

The emissions scam was just a convenient chance for GM and King Obama to look good in the eyes of consumers and put more harsh restrictions on consumer vehicles

Meanwhile 11 of the largest container vessels in the ocean produce more greenhouse gases than every car in America combined

Loving the meager 7000 dollars my car is worth now but it doesn't matter because it's a great car that will have an enthusiast following in due time
