I quite like Skyrim despite what people say although I have played the shit out of it.
I want to know what games you all like and any you would recommend for being comfy, I have plenty of time to start playing a new one too.

for me it has a lot to do with nostalgic value. it was my first real post apocalyptic open world game and i fell in love with it. i know i'll get the "muh atmosphere" meme picture but that was really a big part of why i liked it. so creepy and bleak looking.
i mean, new vegas is a better game in terms of sheer technicality, like the gun system and combat is better and there are more factions and endings and stuff but 3 will always be "my game" of the series

If you have never played a Fallout game before than you won't know what to expect therefore Fallout 4 is a good game. If you played FO 1, 2, 3, and New Vegas it's still a good game but you would just look at it more critically. I rate FO4 9/10 it's excellent but not perfect.

I prefer Morrowind although it's not as accessible and comfy on the surface. But once you adapt to the culture and harsh environment, it's a lot more fun.
Typically when I want to get comfy, I'll put the fire on, open the window, get a blanket, and read a book while sipping on a chilled drink. Or if it's a nice day I'll go to the park and read there.

I haven't played Oblivion and I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I would suggest trying to approach it as a different game altogether, instead of approaching it through experience. A few hours of that should give you a feel for it.

I loved the whole series but I think this game had an amazing atmosphere and amazing gameplay, even if the story wasn't up to the standards of the first game.
The happy ending also felt really good.
The other games are great and also have amazing stories although bioshock 1 had an extremely anti-climatic ending.
I always got the good endings, I just couldn't kill those girls and it made me feel good being thanked by someone.
Terraria is so comfy. Build yourself a cool fort and have all your NPC friends move in and then hide in at night when the zombies walk around.

It's not a good MMO, but it's genuinely enjoyable if you treat it as a single player game. Once you're done with all the shows and the movies, it's pretty much your only option for more Star Trek, and the missions do a pretty decent job at filling the void.

One-player games are literally designed for you to win. None of it is real. Even your sense of accomplishment is fake. These are inherently shit games, although a few minigames like Osu, Minesweeper, or whatever puzzle game can be a good distraction for a few minutes, only because they themselves have competitive aspects (trying to finish as quickly or as accurately as possible).
In multiplayer games, even the same game, same map, is different each time even if you are playing the same opponent, assuming they are competitive and want to beat you. The butthurt felt by the guy you beat (or the butthurt you feel when you get smoked) is real.

T-hunt in seige has been my go to comfy game.
I'm also playing the ghost in the shell FPS, hey I'm playing a game based in the universe of my fave anime so no h8.
But yes seige is tops right now for me. In the right conditions with the right teammates it's just a fun FPS experience that is different than most out there. You can't run and gun, and the defend vs attack varies up the assault vs camping so it seems to stay fresh longer.

It is definitely worth torrenting or getting on sale. The main storyline is very restrictive but the world is pretty fucking fun to explore. I got to level 27 without starting the main quest.

I haven't played Heart of Thorns but I got to level 80 and dropped it soon after. Story is shit, living world is a gigantic pile of shit, fuckall as far as content. PvP was alright, though.
Mesmer was about the only class I cared to level. Elementalists felt too clunky even if stance dancing made me feel like Invoker from Dota.

it's weird scrolling through all these games i found underwhelming, disappointing,or downright awful (skyrim, fallout 3/4, AC: black flag) and seeing people probably younger than me enjoying them the same way i enjoyed mediocre titles when i was younger
i can still enjoy good vidya but it's more of a cerebral thing, i'm more aware of it, like "yes, this is good." but i faintly remember being able to play certain games even i would admit are 6/10 at best, over and over and over again just because they were so comfy.

You have to think about why you liked your childhood favorites, and it's really not because they were masterpieces.
Dwarf Fortress is perfect. Choosing a chilly tundra and having your dwarfs huddle in the caverns, quietly drinking mushroom wine and tilling the underground fields is great. Nice soundtrack too.

Here's the mod that I used for the beautiful sky texture. Oddly enough, Skyrim has a whole load of neat night's sky texture mods. I suggest using an ENB with it to give it more color and make it stand out even further than it normally does, since a whole lot of people know that Skyrim is well... relatively colorless.

Yep. Skyrim is my comfy. It's not a good game by ANY standard, but I love it. Plus the modding community is large and incredibly active.
For almost 500 hours I've wandered the roads and trails of Skyrim, under a thousand faces and a thousand names.
Also I kind of have a huge crush on Serana. I want to protect this smile.
I'd love to play Skyrim again but then I think of the multiple hours it'll take to set up all the mods again.

Souls games are surprisingly pretty comfy. You'd think the difficulty would make it stressful, but that's not the case at all. It's a nice feeling wandering the shitty fucked up world, resting at bonfires and wondering how life used to be before the apocalypse hit.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is another favorite of mine. It's a great night time or Halloween game.

Pretty much every Grand Theft Auto, with the exception of V. I can drive around Los Santos from San Andreas and Liberty City from IV without even doing much, just the atmosphere gets me. GTA IV got a lot of shit for the storyline and lack of things to do outside of it, but the setting was perfect and would be my favorite game if it had been more like SA gameplay-wise.
Age of Empires II. Probably the comfiest game in existence. I would spend almost every Saturday and Sunday in front of the PC playing this with cartoons on TV in the background.
Elder Scrolls: Arena. My first RPG. It was a buggy grindfest with not many original quests outside of the main one, but I remember being quite impressed and happily putting hundreds of hours into it.
I could play halo for hours. Too bad 343 killed the franchise.

Morrowind was great for roleplaying depth, interesting setting, cool quests, but the graphics were behind the curve even for 2002 and the game mechanics were clunky.
Skyrim had slick graphics and decent combat, and overall a great combination of rugged wilderness exploration and comfy houses and inns.
Also, Skyrim is great for making QTs, although I'm not the best at it.
