I won't say that makeup CAN'T degrade people, but I've known people who are really into makeup and you have to realize that they are the people who care about it. They pretty much always have a safety backup so the impulse to compete is diminished. Saying that women wear makeup to compete for men is overstating the role competition plays in their motivation, and it is not enough to explain why they actually go out of their way to wear it.
