Would you live in Japan?
>>
>>25090290
I'd live in your hand
>>
>>25090290
it's not actually like muh animes though
I have a sinking feeling that I'd be unhappy no matter where I lived really
>>
If you took the flag of my country and made a cone with it, it would look like the flag of Japan.
>>
>>25090290
No; I would feel out of place and unwelcome.
>>
From what I know about it, it seems near dystopian.
>>
Go to the most depressing, suicide inducing nation on earth? No thanks.
>>
i really don't like asians, i don't like their cultures, i don't like their food, and i don't enjoy their media

so no, i'd probably hate living in japan.
>>
>>25090290
I have for almost ten years now.
Great place.
>>
>>25090290
to become a gaijin giggolo and whore off my white cock to all the lonely nihonjin office ladies?
>>
>>25090449
Any stories?
>>
im an insufferable weeaboo fag and want to but luckily im too lazy to ever make it happen
>>
Probably not. I visited and it was alright but I don't think I'd want to live there.
>>
>>25090467
The 3/11 quake was the worst thing ever, but people are orderly, so I still had my fair share of food and water.

Learn Japanese, be polite and kind, and you'll probably do well. Got married this year too.
>>
>>25090290
Jesus fuck what's with you fags idolizing Japan?

It's just another fucking country and it's definetely NOT like your japanese animes.
>>
>>25090443
Where would you rather live?
>>
>>25090290
My delusions say yes. The rest of me says fuck no it'd be worse than here

How do I learn Japanese? I know Hiragana and Katakana now but I am stuck on Kanji. I don't know how to look up what they mean. I need some kind of japanese-english dictionary that says the definition in both japanese and english. But how do you look up kanji character in a dictionary? what kind of logical order is used?
>>
>>25090538
a tropical island with no one on it
>>
>>25090290
If it was like an anime then yeah. In real life I don't like their culture. Not in an offensive way. That's just not my lifestyle.

Before you faggot weebs get all uppity, yes I actually have been there.
>>
>>25090290

Only if I were independently wealthy. But then if I were independently wealthy there are a lot of places I would be happy to live.

The xenophobia would be a real problem. Considering that even westerners that have been living there 30 years and speak with true fluency are still not accepted as true members of society... I'd be happy to visit and live there for extended periods, but no more than that.
>>
>>25090589
usually they're organized by radicals and stroke count/order

the only way to learn it is to beat them into your head with brute-force repetition. you gotta spend hours with flash cards and write each character a few hundred times
>>
>>25090625
These radicals, they are different small elements or strokes that make up the kanji character right? Do those give some clue as to the pronunciation of the kanji character?
>>
I do live in Japan.

It's okay, I guess. People overrate it.
>>
But OP,I live in Japan.
I also have a qt jp gf.
>>

>>
>>25090669

>>
>>25090624
Are you an accepted member of society in your own country? If you post here, probably not. Japanese xenophobia is usually kept on a private level these days. You don't experience it much unless you go to an area full of foreigners who do crime and ignore social customs. I.E. Tokyo.
>>
>>25090290
No because I don't speak a lick of Japanese.
>>25090392
You're thinking of Finland.
>>
>>25090625

Chinese is obviously very similar. For those looking to learn either language, I guess you can take comfort in the fact that even native speakers had to spend a huge amount of time and effort learning to write.

It was funny, we asked my Chinese coworkers in the office if they could remember how to write the character for 'sneeze' and no one could remember of the top of their heads.
>>
Only if i didnt need to work there.
>>
>>25090705

True. What bothers me isn't dumbass foreigners not respecting local customs who get what they deserve in scorn, it's the quiet distance of perfectly good and polite people who deep down would never accept you. This isn't unique to Japan, but in Japan's case it's certainly stronger than most. The thought, not how they express it.
>>
>>25090709
Kanji IS Chinese, dummy. It's characters borrowed from China when the Buddhists came.

Japanese use about 4,000 kanji while the Chinese use something like 9,000. Japanese mix in Hiragana and Katakana, which I believe is derived from Kanji as well.
>>
>>25090749

Thus the 'obviously'. Please try not to assume everyone online is disagreeing with you.
>>
>>25090749
You can get by just fine with 2,000 kanji while Chinese needs 4,000. But I read somewhere that Chinese is easier to read because characters are only ever read one way and only ever mean one thing.
>>
>>25090745
I live in Japan (as a student) and despite always being known as "the Foreigner" the people have been very kind, polite, and even friendly. Old folk say hello to me in the street and bow their heads. Tons of young people love talking to me. As long as you're not a G.I. or an English teacher you will have a good reception with communities. This is outside of Tokyo, btw. My area has few other foreigners.
>>
>>25090592
Why haven't you worked towards it?
>>
>>25090589
There's no way around effort, you need to put the time in and push yourself. I found it got easier around 500 kanji or so.

Also, don't just socalize with just other foreigners, and do mundane chores yourself.
>>
>>25090766
I'm not that guy who you responded to, bruh.

>>25090784
Japanese Kanji sometimes has one, or sometimes has more meanings. A lot of it has to do with combinations.
>>
>>25090784
Nope. One character can have more than one meaning.
>>
>>25090589
You can look up kanji by drawing them on jisho.org among other web sites.

I'm just learning myself so just sharing my limited experience/sense of it (big grain of salt etc) but the most commonly suggested routes I've seen are Heisig's Remembering the Kanji which basically teaches you how to recognize all ~2000 joyo kanji via mnemonic tricks. Though it doesn't provide you readings and full definitions (just "keywords" which basically amount to a single "memorable" definition) the argument is that the full information for every kanji is way too much to study and memorize and you're better off learning to recognize them so you can then more easily figure out how they work in real-world use cases

Alternatively, it's really tiring to just memorize character after character without actually learning how the language works, lots of people want a more integrated approach or burn out on this and I was one of the latter. I'm working through the Genki books which introduce relevant kanji lesson-by-lesson along with grammar etc.

It may well be the case that none of this is new or helpful information, just rambling haha

No. I'm socially incompetent and devoid of willpower and drive.

I can tell you right now, that moving to a foreign country period, even some shitty Balkan middle of nowhere country, requires that you are at least human with average neuro-chemical makeup. That is to say, not a jaded piece of shit, in order to integrate into society in at least the minimum capacity needed to survive, learn the language etc.
People are not confrontational where i am, and on average couldn't give less of a fuck about me. Now imagine being this sort of person, which is probably the average r9k poster, and seeing your survival tier needs more than doubled, and on top living among very confrontational and hard to get along with people.

Your chances at not getting stigmatized and catching shit every time you go out for a walk are nil, much less having basic amicable social contact.

bad relationship between foreigner and resident. I would visit but would not live there just for the culture shock thing and for some exploration. but since I am going to be a foreigner forever there and treated like a stranger no matter how I try to blend in. I wouldn't live on this country but, being forever stuck in french Canada still suck balls when you're not completely white.

It's hard to say unless I actually lived there, a lot of weebs seem to get disillusioned after a while but I think its because they don't expect it. I've heard a lot of stuff that suggests I'd like it for a visit maybe stay for a few years but then things would get on my nerves such as always been seen as "Gaijin", the language barrier and the 'everybody is happy, no complaints' would grate on me after a while.

Why are people so insistent that Japan is nothing like anime?

I've been a bunch of times and it always feels bizarrely familiar because, obviously, anime is set in Japan. It feels like you've seen everything before even when you haven't, so many aspects of the place are very recognizable. People don't act like over the top, exaggerated characters of course, but if you watch more realistic series and read manga it isn't so jarring.

And honestly, it's a pretty great place to be if you're into that sort of thing. You'll always run into anime merch (gatchapon at the very least), there's a lot of cute characters advertising things, manga is huge, etc. The novelty might wear off but people are too quick to dismiss the idea of enjoying Japan because you enjoy anime.
>>
>>25093835
Fortunately I live in NZ and we have a good climate and we're isolated like them but we don't have an interesting culture. I don't think you need to know Japanese there and I'm learning more or less because video game localization is fucking terrible.

Been there often, fluent speaker and freelance translator. Keep in mind, I'm an anime fan.

I'd like to visit and go shopping there as a holiday treat. I don't know if I'd want to live there, though. It would probably be very lonely and I'm black so I wouldn't feel comfortable being stared at all the time. I've also heard that some Japanese people tend to touch our hair without permission because it's so unusual to them. I know I wouldn't like that either even if they were being friendly.

It'd be a good way to brush up on my language skills though. I'd love to learn another language like Japanese but it seems quite complicated.
