natural progression, bro. As a game gets older, new mechanics need to be added to diversify. Look at League of Legends, Hearthstone, etc. New characters/cards/whatever tend to have new mechanics and a higher skill ceiling to balance them out. Compare something like Zed to Annie. High risk, high reward. Or compare something like Tree of Life to Reno Jackson. Higher risk, higher reward.
It's natural and even healthy for a game to do something like that. I'd rather them introduce something like Ryu rather than Fire Emblem Waifu #72

I don't believe for a second bayo-literally-who-a was the top "realizable" character that would have made a good pick, but overall I'm just happy it's another unique character and there was no wolf in the direct.
