I'm more of a 2003-2005 man. I was pretty fucking miserable in 2002 but I have nostalgia for a few things from those days like Newgrounds, erowid.org, the heyday of msn messenger (although it was still limping along as late as 2009), GTA San Andreas, Pokemon etc.
Oh, perhaps the most important one:
Malls as a cultural center. When teenagers would literally just go to the mall to hang out as an activity in itself. Also when electronics stores used to be PACKED with people lining up for the latest iThing. These still exist but online stores have really stolen their thunder and they don't have the relevance they once had.

It was before normies took control of the internet and when people didn't mind and actually wanted stay anonymous or act under a pseudonym when online.
Normies couldn't take having that disconnection from normal society and decided to make the internet as part of their lives rather than something to escape to.

>this entire thread that regularly gets posted
my point is that you're too young to even be aware of the 90s.
Both decades had their share of pros and cons.
If anything the 00s get much more celebrated on r9k because
-it was the time the internet was becoming mainstream but was still a sort of Wild West gold rush where anything could happen
-it was the childhood for young anons
-it was the teen years for older anons
I'm older so my childhood was literally the 90s and my teen years were the late-90s & early-2000s, so I got to experience both.
The best decade is objectively the2010s
>>25089289
Baby is legitimately a 10/10 song
>>25089035
The 00s were extremely shit for reasons.
The jews tried to niggerify the white population-- early on in the decade, they were pushing nigger music EXTREMELY hard, as well as nigger fashion. All the kids in my middle school (myself included) were wearing baggy jeans hanging low and oversized white t-shirts.
Then halfway through, we got all this emo shit which would eventually evolve into the hipster bullshit that's been big (but mercifully seems to be on its way out).
>>25089079
>why the fuck did girls like that shit so much/?
Good question. Every now and then, I get nostalgic and look up some of my friends profiles on pre-normiebook social networking sites, and every now and then I dig up an old photo of myself from that time.
While I won't say I look cringeworthy, I will say that I'll never understand why the hell I got so much postive female attention back then.
I dunno, where people more "bold" back then? I dunno.
But yeah, sucks that I didn't have the balls to go through with a lot of the girls. Made out so many times, but never really knew how to "go for the kill".
Only a few real regrets though, like that 9/10 red-head in my high school class who obviously wanted the D. But I was to "nice" and too beta to go through with her, even when heaven gave me a glorious opportunity lol.

this is true
I was born in 95, and I still hear my peers gush on about how great the 90's were. I have no memories of the 90's because I was only 4 when they ended- the bulk of my childhood was in the early-mid 2000's.
the internet is the only thing that strikes me as the main difference between now and then. The internet is ubiquitous- intertwined with nearly every aspect of our lives. An emphasis is placed on networking now, and nearly every person has a vast digital paper trail whether you like it or not.
The internet was pretty much mainstream by 2000, but it still felt like uncharted territory. I miss the emphasis on anonymity. people were hesitant to give out actual information about themselves, and doing so was a HUGE sign of trust. It honestly felt safer. Also I remember in 2007 I was active on a number of internet forums, now I don't even hear of anybody using them anywhere. 2008-2009 was kind of the tipping point where social media and smartphones made anonymity obsolete. 4chan (and to a lesser extent Reddit) is the only place where anonymity is still being valued.

>>25091979
yeah, actually you nailed it. but even they now sound nothing alike from what they started off as or what made them popular in the first place. There is a bit of a metalcore scene as the major alternative scene.
actually, anything from punk to hardcore to black metal kids are still into, but it's just that each of those music scenes are a fraction of what they were at their peaks. Not like in 1999 where everyone was into nu-metal.

I wasn't either of those but I'm definitely not proud of what I listened to in 2003. I still love some of the stuff I listened to shortly after, but even then I'm entirely aware that my ear was untrained and I only liked things because they were catchy. I find myself relistening to things I hated as a teenager/preteen and finding them amazing the second time around.
>>25092076
They are absolute dad rock though. It actually took them only one album to go full dad rock, the difference between Hybrid Theory and Meteora is absolutely night-and-day
Actually most bands from the late 90s & early 2000s are still around but they've all sold out or gone soft or "experimental"
Slipknot especially, their last album literally made me mad. Stone Sour from 2002 was heavier than that shit.
>>25092132
Meteora had some decent songs.
>>25092121
My point is that pop (popular, top 40) music from back then had so much more variety in it, and some "alternative" music to it rather than the avalanche of electro-R&B garbage that is 2015 pop music.
At one point Korn was more popular on MTV than the Backstreet Boys. Top 40 pop music today has almost been the same for a decade.

Hybrid Theory had a few soft songs like In The End, but Meteora was 13 tracks of different versions of In The End. Hybrid Theory was very much a nu-metal album. One Step Closer or any other track kicks the shit out of Numb or Somewhere I Belong.

I found an old data CD I saved back when 4chan was a new secrit club, perfectly preserved. Had a load of images that are just cringe inducing now in terms of humour, a winamp, snes9x and winrar installer, SNES roms, and an mp3 file of "I Will Survive" sung with Counter Strike related lyrics.
I don't think I can destroy the CD, but I'm definitely going to hide the cunt.
>>25092227

I actually really like a few songs from Papa Roach's first album, but they were another nu-metal band to immediately jump the shark on their 2nd album. They tuned into some weird ironic glam rock project, and their lead singer ended up looking like a transgender lesbian.

29 here, late 90s/early 2000s internet was the best, video games were consistently decent till about 2006 (I mostly played the Final Fantasy games back then) which is when I was addicted to WoW and didn't pay attention to anything else till 2009 where I was mostly watching anime and then again in 2011 when I started get back into video games. I don't pay attention to modern music but it feels like nothing new has been done since 1995. Sopranos effectively started the golden age of Television which still continues to this day, movies on the other hand were shit. I occasionally watched adult swim stuff like Initial D / GitS and a lot of good series aired around that time though.
Also is it just me or is the later part of the decade (every 7th year onwards) when stuff starts to take a shift? I've got a feeling next year is going to be even more controversial for everything then 2017 will see a big explosion and shit will see a big shift especially politics.

Maybe you should go back and look at what was popular in that era. The mid/late 90s pop culture was very innocent and light-hearted compared to today.
Pop culture today is way more violent, perverse and openly sexual than it was back then.

Reminds of the angsty teen aspect of the 00's.
God I miss that so much.

This is weird but I was just about to post how I thought shit changed after 9/11. Before that everything seemed fun, then everyone started paying more attention to the news and realised the world isn't actually a nice place to live in.

The whole 'Scene' clique kinda ruined liking them back then, even though they had some pretty good songs. Kinda glad the shit bias is wearing off a lot, I actually like them.
Ha-ha, I can't believe people are actually having nostalgia over the 00s. The 00s were shit.
It just shows how young /r9k/ is. Most of you can't be over 20.

There was so much freedom in a lot of different ways, if only they had more of the roleplaying elements in their games now, minus the roll the dice combat system.

Bitches don't know bout my summer of '93 nostalgia
>>25094812
I don't really consider them punk, but they were pretty awesome, anon. Really takes me back.
>>25095852
>sadly kids growing up now will look back on these years with the same nostalgia we all looks back on the 90s/early 2000s
You're probably right. But for now, it's time we look back on the 00's. It had it's quirks, sure, but it's definitely special for a lot of reasons.
2002 = spending hours on my flatmate's computer having cybersex with girls on dobedo. Good times tbqh

tecnhically pop punk would be stuff like the ramones
>>25089035
For an autistic PC gamer playing online and not having much social contact throughout middle and high school 2003-2007 were amazing.
>>25097003
If you look at what's actually going on behind the scenes Ramones are Art Punk. The difference is one crowd plays dumb on purpose well the other plays dumb because that's all they can play.
>tfw Habbo
Who played this shit? Screenshot is from 2004 I think.
early 2000s were when anime and other cool kids cartoons were a thing on television which made watching tv as a kid fun. now it's just live action tv shows or sloppy animated 3D shows or those hyper stylized cartoons. not to mention the stories don't have soul.
Sup motherfuckers
fucking robot filter,ignore this
>Wobble That Gut is also another great track with a nice wobble sub bassline and a great beat, a very creepy feel to it on this heavy, typical Skream produced track.
>>25097569
I did, it was around 2007 though, pretty late. It was fun for a while and used like 30 euros to buy coins. They added way too much things to the game.
>>25094549

Same situation here anon. Played 07scape a bit, got 2 99s and then realized it wasn't fun.
All the community cares about is being the best, there's no concept of having fun.
Also starting again but not having the curiosity and lack of knowledge as a beginner sucks.

You're going to say "underage!!!" or "Those were the early 2000s, you practically GREW UP in them, how could you not know them?", but the thing is, I don't remember shit from ages 3-6 other than weird colors/shapes and drinking from a sippy cup. I don't know anyone who remembers those parts of life well, either.
I'd say the Bieber era, 2007-2009, is more my speed. It was a "so bad, it's good" time.

Sounds like a nightmare unless you enjoy listening to voice shit posting, thats like the era of the endless summer for gaming. 90's/early 2000's was the god-tier of internet gaming on PC before computers got cheap enough for every pleb to own one.

'97 here. I can recall a bunch of things growing up. I remember having a shit computer, I remember playing Phonics with this rabbit character. I remember I used to play with my covers before going to sleep, and beat games that are considered hard today. I remember signing up for sites that were multiplayer. I remember many things, arguably more than now. It was a nice ride.

Hello my fellow /school shooter/, castle was way better imo.
Any yuro robots played Metin2? I spent like good 4-5 years playing that game, both on the official and private servers.
official server feels
>tfw grinding for 12 hours slaying black orcs one group at a time just to get 2 levels
>tfw looting 30% damage RIB from mobs
>tfw getting my first skill to grandmaster
>tfw buying gold illegaly with my pocket money
private server feels
>tfw learning how to install a chinese client of the game
>tfw even to this day sometimes typing 0 instead of o because you couldn't type o on the chinese clientl0l
>tfw playing through hamachi vpn
>tfw setting up your own shitty server to play on with friends
