One Piece is all about friends and stuff and it's got lots of content to get through, I'd recommend reading the manga but if you want to watch the anime it trails off in quality eventually.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is another favourite of mine because it has some great characters and dialogue to follow and again has a lot of content.

I wouldn't recommend Aria to someone just getting into anime. Pure SoL is something you have to get used to first. Wouldn't want to ruin a masterpiece by watching it too early.
Watch a couple comedy SoL's first, then go for Aria. Hyakko, Barakamon, gj-bu, minami-ke, or school rumble would be a good intro for people just getting into the genre.
