Well, trying it on the back of your hand definitely does not have the same effect. The feeling of another person's lips is way different, especially since they're reciprocating the action. You really don't know how it is until you do it, but I myself find it pretty enjoyable. My girlfriend and I were making out earlier and she said I was really good, so I guess that's good.

A lot of it is about noticing what the other person is doing as much as what you're doing
Keep a rhythm going, don't think too much or you might freeze up
Also don't go straight into aggressive open mouth tongue shoving mode. Work up to it instead, because it's insanely hot when the tension required for it has been built, but is off-putting otherwise.
A lot of it is up to personal preference so if someone thinks you're bad don't take it to heart. There is no objectively good kisser.
