That's what I have historically done, it was fine for the year and a half or so that I last engaged in it. I have one friend now, I see him a few times per month and we play vidya. He has a gf so I guess that almost counts as two friends. I'm not sure if you're implying this is a problem you personally have, but if so, have you considered finding an internet friend? That's what I used to do. You could try online roleplaying/tabletop games (fairly likely to have robots), or skype and steam or something. I don't have any advice for making irl friends though since I have never done that (the singular current friend is someone I ran into who I went to high school with, he did all of the friend-making effort).
