There is bad metal and good metal, just like any other genre. Good metal bands use their "heaviness" as a means to express a really oppressive and dark atmosphere, and when you pair that with some lighter, more melodic instrumentation it can be very beautiful. For an example, listen to choirs of the eye by kayo dot, its a 10/10 album with just as many beautiful parts as punishing heavy parts. Its sort of like watching a good horror film
