It's a game that ties its narrative into its mechanics in so many ways.
I don't really care much for its actual story/ the end of the pacifist route shit (genocide route made me feel more desu) it's just that I reeeaally like it from a game design standpoint. Hell, each generic enemy has personality that is represented even through the way you dodge their attacks.

Toriel is supposed to be obnoxious/ annoying at the very beginning, because her character is a parody of hand holding tuTORIALs. (She literally holds your hand through one of the bits)
Sans is meant to be a shitposter who has given up on taking life seriously. Everyone treats everything in such high regards that he went a full loop and is finding stupid shit to be more fascinating, thus the indulgence of shitty jokes.
He's literally a 4chan shitposter incarnate.
But as you said, we get comics and gay mashups and ships with sans crying, papyrus admitting he's gay, toriel breast hugging everyone in the series, etc. etc.
Its storytelling mechanics (particularly enemy attacks) are fucking rock solid though.

I literally just like how well the story brings you in through minimalist art and genius use of mechanics + player choices. Things happen to YOU, not the character on screen. (until the end of the pacifist route >_>)
I liked genocide route the most desu cause it made me really feel like a true piece of shit, and the final boss for it was just a shitstorm of emotions, skill, and spot on narrative/ commentary about how and why I did what I did.
... But if all I saw were "omg how great are these gay characters!" and "look at how cute my asriel art is!!!" then I'd roll my eyes at the series. I'm guessing that TobyFox is ultimately regretting taking that approach a bit too excessively, and just wish everyone would think more about what actually mattered. (Tying in game mechanics with story)
