Cigarettes are hugely expensive in Australia because the government feels free to tax them to hell while pretending it's for "health reasons". For someone who doesn't smoke...even when you take into account the astronomically expensive rent, etc - an American in the service industry is significantly worse off than an Australian on minimum wage.
This isn't because the minimum wage is a good thing. All the minimum wage does is inflate the cost of hiring people, so there are less jobs available at entry level and everyone needs to be connected to get one. The minimum wage is also only ever set in accordance with what the government thinks employers can bear, so they set the minimum wage slightly higher than what employers would be paying anyway. Americans are able to pay their lowest tier workers shit because there's simply huge numbers of unqualified people competing for these jobs.
