I've had classes where the final was 100% of the grade.
One had a 30 question final. We had 24 hours, and could do any 24 questions. We could only work on the final in the exam room, but could leave and return at any time for that 24 hours.
6 questions were traps and would take multiple hours to complete. The rest were expected to take slightly under an hour.

This was pretty heavy math; Google was of little help. It was constructing proofs linking different conjectures. The problems built on each other as well, so you would have to use the answers from some of them to help you solve other problems.
The meta-problem was figuring out the order in which you needed to attack them .

However, I think they are just trying to get us ready to pass the board exams.
But still, I hate it.
Every exam was comprehensive. So, each exam covered 20-30 chapters. We had 4 exams; one exam per day for 4 days. We basically had the night before to study for each exam.
Sounds great OP, Id want classes that were 0% homework 100% final exam. That should really be the only thing that fucking matters.

93% on the midterm earns you 23.25 points
a 60% on everything but the final and midterm gives you 24 points

I'd actually be grateful if more weight was given to final exams rather than shitty mundane things like homeworks and tests. That way it'll just be like my old high school days when I just slacked off all day and only had to do well on the actual A Levels to get a good grade.
Here, since the homework, midterm grades and exams get similar weightings, you're pretty much forced to be on edge for the whole semester. I've seen people get sick and essentially flunk the semester because it's impossible to catch up once you trip. I didn't expect Americans to make school so wagecucky.
>americans have to study their asses of every week, do multiple projects, expose themselves to SJW propaganda, and risk getting kicked out of university they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to if they fail 2 courses, just to get a useless degree and work at the local mcdonalds

Pretty sure they won't kick you out for failing 2 courses. They'll probably just ask you to switch major or something.
Top tier universities with really difficult classes don't like to lose the students they've picked and typically do lots to keep them. Low tier universities don't kick out bad students because they need funding.

The actions in the real world happen and exist before the information gets to the net, you deluded fuck.
The number of humans taking a graduate level mathematics course, and the number of people doing so that need to look up answers to solve problems is far too low for any content about the subject matter (that isn't a research paper) to be hosted on the web.
>final is 18% of the grade
>BUT if you are within 2% points of a different overall grade(e.g. A-, B) your overall grade will be adjusted in the direction of your final
If you end up with an 88 (including your final grade at 18%) and got an A- or A on the final, you get an A-. If you got a B+ on the final, you get a B+. If you get a B or lower on the final, you get a B. So your 88% grade barely matters. It just disqualifies you from an A and makes it hard to get lower than a B.

Most liberal arts classes (not STEM or economics) have most of their grades determined by projects and papers, lots of reading, maybe a discussion component
Otherwise most classes have homework count as 10-20% of the grade (in the form of ~weekly problem sets), maybe 2-3 midterms that count as 15-25% of your grade each, and a final that counts from 15-50%.
If your average dips below 2.0 (a C grade, which is usually near the bottom of a class) you get on probation; if you are unable to raise your average above 2.0 for a few semesters you are usually kicked out.
The main difference between our countries is that our universities range from extremely selective to basically open admission. So there is a large difference in difficulty of material between schools
>>25034546

Its politically incorrect, but the reality is that even being gifted is a matter of luck. And beyond the luck you need to be born gifted, you need the luck go actually manage to be part of a certain 8% of a group of gifted people to get into MIT.
>>25041238
Different programs have different acceptance rates so I really have no idea. Just look it up on your own.
What you should probably think about is why you want to attend this place anyway. If you're only here because of the name and don't actually enjoy doing nothing but study 60 hours a week and more, you're going to have a pretty miserable time up to the point where it might not even be worth it anymore.
Also, if you're not particularly inherently smart, your colleagues will literally wipe the floor with you. It's quite common here to feel that your neighbor completely obsoletes you in an intellectual sense, and that depresses a lot of people who used to be the superstar of their high school or whatever.

tfw you've been chatting up this qt 3.14 all semester and it seemed like maybe for once a girl might actually like me. she's transferring to another school next semester but it's only 10 minutes away and today was the last day of classes.
i was planning to ask for her number so we can stay in touch but i was going to wait until class got out and we were saying our goodbyes and shit because if i asked her before class and struck out it would have made it awkward to sit next to her for the next 90 minutes.
class ended, she got up and walked out quickly without even giving me a second look or saying goodbye. this is after spending like 10 minutes talking to each other before every fucking class of the semester and knowing that she's transferring to a completely different school and we might never see each other again. i fucking hate women. i'm going to go kill myself.

My Mechanics exam was 8 questions, and we could do any 6. The exam started at 5, and the professor strolled in around 5:30 and was like, "yeah, sorry about that. I'll be here all night. Take as much time as you need." All 8 questions were hard as fuck and some took multiple sheets of just trying out different methods to solve the problem. It was basically an exam measuring how little you were going to fail. I wasn't even a Physics major.
Honestly, that's my favorite kind of exam. Anyone who likes easy exams is wasting their time and money. Seriously, I knew people who got jobs around universities, bought housing, and lived around and still got to party all the time. People who spend thousands of dollars to go party are beyond fucking retarded.

I'm a theatre major and luckily I didn't need a portfolio (I do design, not acting).
For a couple places I know that require portfolios, you usually are placed in like a preliminary art major so you can take classes to build your portfolio and then the department reviews your portfolio after your first year to fully accept you into the program.
Fucking sucks, m8. I hope you can find a way to get in.
>Exam 1 25%

Fuck you physical chemistry. The final exam was brutal. The only thing we are graded on are our answers, no chance for partial credit or anything. The average for the final was a 62 and I somehow pulled an 80. Since the average for the class was a C/C- he didn't curve anything so I'm glad I made a B.

Actually that sounds pretty fucking fantastic, but I can't seem to find any colleges like that in my state. It usually says fill out the application with a portfolio so I'm trying to figure out what level they expect you to be. Because if you are applying to legit art schools that is probably your problem. They want to make sure you are serious about it and have some form of talent before accepting you.
Also, are you a senior in high school applying to colleges or are you trying to escape NEET-dom?

I'm a sophomore college student in STEM. I am researching art schools, but I've only found one that hasn't asked for a portfolio and another that offers Fine Arts but it's an AS and I want to enter for a BFA.
So basically I'm going to transfer, although I'd prefer to leave all of the STEM behind. I don't think I've seen any "major universities" since I'm looking strictly at ones in my city, and the most major school in NYC is Julliard I think, but that's performing arts.
I mean when you're looking at careers to pursue nobody actually tells you here are all these top arts, design or creative schools you could go to, so I can't name any top art schools, just going on whatever has the highest acceptance rate and lowest tuition.
It's fucking difficult making the transition from pure STEM to art. Where do you even start with this shit.

> Only 3 exams and each covers about 12 artifacts out of a list of around 30+ from several different eras in history, and you have to basically guess which 12 will be on the fuckng exam.
> Entire exam is short answer detailing the importance of various artifacts combined with two long form essay questions given before the exam date.
> Have to know everything down to dates because my professor hadn't ever taught a class before and needed to grasp at whatever vestiges of authority they could
> Begin skipping after getting a C on a quiz because I forgot the exact location the Sarson stones that make up stone henge were imported from and the exact date that it is believed to have begun construction...I remembered that it used post and lintel and what it's theorized to have been used for but that wasn't enough for them
> Failed class because I couldn't pass ANY of the exams despite doing well on 2/3 of the assigned papers
> Couldn't keep up with mandatory participation assignments because they required me to travel out of town to see lectures and I don't own a car.

I'm not an art student, but I guarantee you they will need a portfolio, especially if you're looking at anything prestigious, let alone Julliard... Also, you mentioned careers, why would you go to art school for a career? I'm not trying to meme, I would like to go to an art school, but it's really just to develop your skills. You have to actually have some nice work to make a career out of it.
>geology exam in an hour
>no idea what these absolute madmen are going to ask
Like, what the hell could you even test? Its all just rocks.
Sometimes fun-Engineering can be hard in its own Way.

Honestly, fuck professors who think thats a good idea
For anyone who needs help finding motivation to write their papers, make sure to fap beforehand. Shit always helps me focus
My exam in edaphology is starting in two and a half hours.

I'm the anon you originally replied to.
I'm actually a chemistry and dramatic art double major. I fucking feel you on that so hard. I'm doing the same thing you're doing but going into lighting design. Unless you have started from day one knowing you want to go into an art, you pretty much have no guidance.
I'm fortunate enough to go to a major university where I can double major in both of these things and be pretty much the only lighting designer on campus (where theatre is pretty huge here) so I am constantly designing and being able to build up my portfolio.
You just gotta keep searching. If you find some BFA programs you like I would call them up and ask about what the expect from your portfolio. Then take a year building it up. Myself I'm trying to go for my MFA after I work a little bit after I graduate.
Does your current university not have an art major?
Got a 58 on my final
Which got me a 70 overall in the class.
I thought I even did really well on that final, what the fuck gives desu
Butt seriously, this makes me feel both sad and not sad
>Class participation: 20%
I show up and get As on the tests, whats it to you if I don't ask dumbass questions like everyone else
>>25049256
I just use career and ambition synonymously although I don't have any unrealistic expectation that after I get my degree in the arts that I'm going to get a stable job like I would if I did something else. I know the risks. I'm not trying to get into any prestigious art school either nor can I. I'll take anything legitimate that'll accept me.
I just want to focus solely on art, not for money nor for some successful career, but for myself while getting some guidance from those experienced and getting a degree for it. Also I don't want to sit around being a NEET, so college is my only answer. When I was younger I had great drive and ambition for my art, I still do, but I took a detour and wanted to learn more about computers and engineering for a while so I went somewhere for it. But now I'd like to return back to the arts. I am also a writer and a very good one, and plan on trying to get a minor or something for creative writing since that could land me a small job that isn't freelance.
>>25049421
Yeah, I would have loved to take the art high school route but you had to audition for those as well, and I just didn't do it which I regret.
I went to a technical and vocational school.
My uni unfortunately only has architecture and an odd version of some graphic arts, but that's not what I want to do.
But thanks for the help, I also considered taking a year off to practice rigorously to make a portfolio and apply somewhere. I really hope I can figure this all out, maybe get accepted on the first try once I come up with something that shows proper skill. I really hate having to drop out of one college and go through the process again to find another.

I'm not failing uni but I feel the same regarding "jobs with stupid tasks". I just want a low stress job that pays decently and even though I'm in my final year I still don't prefer a job related to my major.
>>25049690
I took a semester off to work on my portfolio, and I ended up getting into CalArts. If you're dead set on art school anon, it's not too late yet.
But please, please make sure you actually have some semblance of talent before you take a year off. I've seen some seriously deluded artists try and get crushed when they fail.

There's such an engineering stem circle jerk going on nowadays that literally every kind of problem I've been given has bee at least partially googleable. The field is bloated with
>muh six figyurr
cucks who don't know what the fuck they're doing
>>25034874
In real life, it would be a whiteboard.
>tfw I have a calculus 1 exam on Friday at 9 am and haven't even touched antiderivatives yet
>tfw I just got up at 1 A.M and ordered Dominoes
>tfw I've just been eating garlic fingers and bacon+pepperoni pizza with bbq sauce instead of pizza sauce and drank Sprite while watching Scandal and anime
Is one day enough to learn antiderivatives and review everything? I feel like I'm fucked for this exam worth 48% of my grade and I'm just barely passing with a 52%.
>>25050746
>tfw I'm one of those six figure cucks
>tfw my uni is full of these kids that say they want to be rich but are dropping out of engineering like flies because they can't handle the math
I mean, I know I'm doing it for the money, but at least I'm putting in the time to actually get good at this shit even if it's not my passion you know?
>>25050812
If you make it past second year, you're in the clear. If not, you'll probably crash and burn. Trust me. Been there, done that.
Potentially making good money in the distant future isn't enough motivation to finish a degree for most people. You gotta do what you love.
>older guy in my program
>always struggled with the material
>didn't see him during the final couple of weeks or any of the exams

Why do you say this senpai? Is second year where they lay the hardest courses on you or something?

Please share your story.

>Is second year where they lay the hardest courses on you or something?
That's what I've heard from friends. I've only done 1st year engineering.
>Please share your story.
Did AP calc in highschool, was always good at math and physics, so I thought I'd go into engineering for le 6 figures. Hated it, couldn't motivate myself at all.
Now in 3rd year Comp Sci and loving it, making mostly As and A+s. Actually care about the quality of my code and want to impress my peers and professors.
Liking what you do makes all the difference
I FUCKED UP
I DIDN'T HAND IN MY TAKE HOME FINAL ON TIME
I THOUGHT IT WAS DUE ON FRIDAY BUT IT WAS DUE ON MONDAY
I'M GETTING AN F
FUCK I HAVE TO REPEAT THE COURSE FUCK
The rest of my courses this semester were A's and B's so I'm not completely fucked right? I'm second year so this doesn't ruin everything right? I'm shitting myself right now.

Depend on your major. If you're not STEM you are fine. Most STEM programs also don't care about your general education gpa anyway
>>25051288
I'm in my first semester of first year Engineering and failed two out of five of my courses
I didn't study at all (gen chem, programming)
how fucked am I senor?
>>25051288
It's not STEM but it's required for my major.
>>25050984
This is pretty much me except I went into pure math instead of CS. But yeah did mech. engineering for a year and hated it to death, couldn't motivate myself to do any of the coursework because I gave zero shits about it.
>>25030608
>tfw CC had 0 book homework for math and physics (still had mymathlab shit)
>tfw in uni for some of the classes 50% of your grade is homework and lab
>in CC, physics teacher sit there and read your labs right there if you wanted, was invested in your education
>Applied Electromagnetics teacher reads his own book (as in the one he wrote) in class, labs are trash, and for more than a month after classes started there was no contact information for the TAs
I take that final tomorrow (well today). I want to cry and scream and kill everyone.

Yes like Adolf. I don't want to be like Adolf.
I'm not sure what you mean by "talent" unless you're trying to say if I can't even draw landscape correctly that means its not for me.
What does not having a semblance of talent look like? I know I'm quite good at doing eye sketching and getting it near accurate.
I just failed my Biology exam, luckily it's only 10% of the course.
