I have been noticing a loss of hair in the shower, maybe six or seven strands at a time. I shower every other day. This only recently started. However, I lost 20 pounds and was sick for nearly a month with mono. I've only recently returned to a normal diet. Could that be a cause?

The recommended dosage is no more than 1-1.25mg of finasteride. Anymore will not improve your results it will only make it more likely that you suffer negative effects.
Get on Dutasteride if you really think you're immune to side effects and want quicker results.

23 here. My hair is super thin on the top, but fairly thick around the back and sides. Unfortunately, I can't compensate for this with facial hair, as I can only grow neck beards due to my nonexistent jawline, lack of chin, and bird-neck. I have accepted that I shall look like the penguin from Wallace and Gromit.

Are you sure? It looks like the beginning stages of miniaturisation to me unless you're already on fin. If you pull your hairback often and only recently noticed shorter hairs falling to the front when you push back it could be because those hairs are shrinking and weakening.
Only you can truly know what's happening to your hair and it might just be a bad angle, but for your age I'd say you are exceeding "mature hairline" and will be NW3 some point in your early twenties.

You might be able to hold it off for now in that case (that may actually be new growth). Just remember that rogaine doesn't stop the process of hair loss and if you want to actually keep your hair you will need to jump on fin if you are to stop MPB.
You may not have MPB but the denial phase is what a lot of people go through with this shit and it's better to just get a confirmation from a professional dermatologist so you can decide what to do about it and move on with your life.

Not normal at all no but having periods of heavy shedding isn't uncommon unless you're losing massive clumps of hair. It's just with MPB it's always lost in a progressive pattern in the effected areas particularly the hairline and crown. From what I'm aware stress or illness related hair loss is usually more patchy and can include hair loss on the sides or back. I know young kids can have NW2 hairlines from birth also and this can be exaggerated if you happen to have a high hairline.
I wish wearing a wig wasn't considered pathetic, otherwise I'd buy a few to rotate through just because they look better than the barren wasteland of a bald head.
