Is it worth it and what classes should I take

Take whatever the course advisor tells you that you need for an A.A. Get your money up while you go, I'd look for grants and scholarships while I'm there (I didn't have any fin aid when I started, paid for my first semester out of pocket, got smart and actually hit the books, got a couple of scholarships by the next semester), and then you can go to a university, and you don't have to worry about paying for dumb bullshit classes that have nothing to do with what you wanted to study (why did I have learn about Shakespeare, as if I didn't have enough of that in high school, if I was going for math?) for two years, because you already did that at a crazy discount.
An A.A. or an A.S. is useless, except to transfer to a university but it does make everything a lot cheaper. I barely scraped enough dough together to finish my degree, I can't imagine paying four years of that shit instead of two and I only paid for my semester of CC out of pocket.

I'm currently in a doctoral program, got accepted this year, I'm just teaching to pay the bills and pay for the education.

Community colleges in Washington have a "direct transfer" A.A. degree that's designed specifically for people going on to uni. Check if your school/state has something like this. That's what I did & I'd recommend it. You'll save a lot of money but it's only worth it if you actually go on to uni.
