>put paper money in vending machine
>use touchscreen or buttons to select which lottery games, how many entries, and how many draws
>take soon-to-be-worthless piece of paper it prints out

you're literally better off digging a hole in the ground and putting your money there instead

my bad i meant like at a convenience store. i had a scratch off a couple of years ago that was a winner and i went to a gas station at around midnight and the guy said he couldnt cash it at that time.

I prefer vending machines, but if I must talk to an actual person, I hand them my winning tickets, knowing exactly how much they are beforehand, and seeing them show up on a display screen as the clerk redeems them for me. Then I ask for something not too complicated, like today after cashing $4 in winnings, i asked the gas station attendant for "2 Fantasy 5, and 2 mega Millions." If I'm gonna buy $20 of lottery tickets on 4 different lotteries good for multiple draws, I wait until I get to a vending machine. Thank him as I receive the tickets, tip my fedora, make sure my white NB sneakers are tied, and leave.

occasionally some retailers will have their lottery machine shut off after a certain time, and often times the machine is broken or acting up. Also, I've learned that winning lottery draw tickets for Mega Millions and Powerball in USA can't be cashed until the next day, even after the results and prize amounts are published and the self-checking scanner will say you won money or a replay.

well the whole point of the lottery is that the expected value of the game is less than one. If you play a large number of times, which, in aggregate, the general public does, then you'll make approximately the expected value for each dollar you spend. I don't know what the expected value here is (it likely varies between different games, different states, and so on) but for a lot of casino gambling it's somewhere around 0.9. If you don't trust the math, observe that states run these things to make money. If they're making money, lottery players are, overall, losing money. It's a tax on people that are too stupid to realize that they're almost certain to be throwing their money away. That said, I fully support governments raising money this way, since it's voluntary. I can pay less because of idiots like you who throw your money away.

still literally better buying lottery tickets with money than flushing it down the toilet

As long as I learn to manage my lottery addiction so it doesn't become a serious financial problem, there are also psychological benefits to at least having the possibility of winning to dream about. My established resolution in that regard is to buy only 2 tickets per major lottery game per draw. For the first 3 this week I got 3 tickets each, the third set bought with $4 from winning tickets I had form last week.

If buying lottery tickets becomes a financial problem, they are not worth the money spent.

Also, I remember finding many great justification in psychological benefits to smoking in the throes of nicotine withdrawal.

I used to play, lost over $500 and decided to stop, its really addicting though. Made me feel so pathetic every time I lost. It gave my otherwise miserable life some hope. Ive learned to accept that I'll never be rich, and just enjoy my life as much as possible. Alcohol helps.

So thats it? You're just gonna give up on your dreams and resolve to accept life as a wage slave and a drunkard?
