The funny thing about this is that the 'common law' for something like 300+ years was that 12 years old was a reasonable minimum, though this law was hardly ever enforced because it was never an issue.
Then the feminists sought to raise it to 16-18 depending on location, based on the full awareness that this would mean simply prosecuting and imprisoning men - not because of something inherently immoral or outrageous about the act in itself, but as a form of activism to "protect women" from "exploitation". In the UK the legislation concerning this also made homosexual sex between men only illegal. Even though today we recognise the homosex thing as being unfair and a violation of basic liberties, the AoC laws have come to be seen almost as holy, and as having some sort of moral basis.
Oh, and the same feminists who lobbied for AoC also created insane policies like prohibition, and gender prison-segregation so that the men these laws punished would end up being brutalised and raped themselves - while women get privileged treatment.

If men and women were in prison together, rape wouldn't be ALLOWED to happen. Violence against men is seen as less important than violence against women. The moment gender segregation ended, you'd suddenly see huge amounts of resources going in to making prisons significantly safer for everyone.

16-18 is just when women reach FULL sexual maturation, in the sense that the majority of women, by that age could safely have children. It seems reasonable to me that sex before pregnancy is viable should not be encouraged.
