I remember being an awkward 13- or 14-year-old in middle school. I was constantly ostracized by the other kids because my parents were incredibly poor and could barely afford to dress me in clothes they had purchased from Goodwill. Meanwhile, all the other kids' parents were buying them designer labels and video games, which they would never share with me because they systematically needed to exclude me from everything. There was one kid who owned a Game Boy Pocket and brought it to school with him everyday. He was particularly nasty toward me, constantly passing the Game Boy to other kids and telling them not to pass it down to me.
15 years later, I decided to buy a Game Boy Pocket from eBay, of the same color no less. I pick it up and play whenever my confidence is running low, and I tell myself I'm worth owning nice things after all.

I've been playing competitively for about a month now. I'm so bad at doing DI correctly. I have no idea if I'm doing it or not. Thankfully with 20XX I can tell when I L-cancel now, but I wish there was a feature for DI too.

Good luck man. You will definitely witness progress if you keep practicing hard. It's one of the most beautiful things in this game. Good DI comes with lots of experience so keep it up. A one month old player is still fresh. Try going to a regional of some sort to get really fucked up and hyped.

it's applying them correctly and at the right situations that's hard
a lot of people do a lot of needless dash dancing and end up getting wrecked

How long does it take to become OK at this game? I am trying to pick up this game and I got set up with a GC controller/adapter and everything. I'm working on movement techniques and short hop lasers on my Falco. I can wave dash inconsistently, but it's hard. I can't tell if I am L-cancelling correctly. it really is a variety of factors. I main Puff, so I think I picked up the game quicker than a Falco would. I think the best thing you can do is go to locals, get stomped a few times, and have the veterans there teach you stuff. Most people in the Melee community are pretty friendly and helpful.
tl;dr a few months
How do I git gud at smash? I'm fortunate to have a couple of people to practice against at least once a month but this one guy keeps wrecking my shit with Falco. At the moment I seem to do best with Luigi but I win about 1/4 of the time.
