Some people don't get it. I certainly didn't when I was just normal depressed.
But eventually you may transcend to a stage where your depression isn't just sadness/emptiness, but actually active self hatred and anger.
So I take drugs because they make me feel good while at the same time ruining me, and I cut myself for the same reason. Because it's what I deserve.
I would kill myself but doing those things and binge eating actually offers some meaning and pleasure, so I don't kill myself. Probably will soon enough though.

For Tramadol? In my personal opinion best way to try to nod with it would be to take a bit of a benzo, like a milligram or two of etizolam or alprazolam with 50 milligrams of it. Then wait half an hour and take another, and then wait a bit longer and take another. Tramadol is very unique in that it potentiates itself. It's more effective if you stagger the dose. So I'd recommend taking an hour or two to take 150-200 milligrams of it seeing how you feel along the way. Tramadol isn't a heavy CNS depressant, so the chance of OD in that way is very unlikely, and any minuscule risk of seizure is nixed by the benzodiazepines.

In my experience, taking 300 mg or so is like a poor man's opiate. You get loopy/drowsy and feel generally nice, although the body load itself is not anything to write home about.
It's not worth it though, if you did that every day you'd be retarded in less than a year. It's still a pretty lackluster experience, but an ok time if you're bored, and doing a heavy trip dose is the worst fucking idea ever

It's just okay. I have a hard time comparing benzodiazepines. The Restas might be a better investment because it lasts an insanely long time. The half life is literally 60-90 hours. So I'm saving some of that to taper off with because that's even longer than Valium, which is the preferred drug of choice for tapering.

It's a fairly strong sedative. It will sedate you like a benzo, but make you more sleepy, and if you fight through the sleepiness, things can get weird. If you manage to stay up on a decent dose of it, amnesia is fairly likely, you can sometimes catch visual distortions, etc. Last time I took it (with flutoprazepam and weed also in my system) it knocked me out, and at one point I sort of woke back up and the white LED on my computer was projecting a bunch of different colors. Or rather it looked that way because of the drugs.
And the whole "not as bad as benzo's" thing is kind of like the old "oxycontin isn't as bad as the other painkillers" line. It was basically a big pharma tactic to get to sell more drugs. If he hasn't slept without them in years, he's hardcore addicted to a drug with a large effect on your GABA receptors. If he stopped taking them he would probably go through some absolutely hellish withdrawals.
