I'm sure there are a lot of miserable robots out there. And the world is a dismal place, especially as portrayed by the media. But the playful nature of 4chan itself provides a lens to magnify this misery in a light of self-deprecating humor and casual mayhem.
It's been said that loneliness is the human condition. This is in part why I frequent r9k. In spite of the negativity and hatred, it's the most honestly personable board, in my opinion.

Absolutely. 60 years ago, there were more jobs, better food, stronger family unit, homogenized races and cultural identity, women weren't crazy psycho whores like they are today, school wasn't that important, houses were cheaper, there was better sense of community and people were more neighbourly, people were also more religious and spiritual which made them kinder and more compassionate but also intolerant of harmful things to society.
Today is basically the complete opposite of all of that.
