Why do people talk about age 18 like it's the universal age of consent in the US? In most states it's 16 or 17.

Most films and a large bulk of television shows are filmed in California, where the AOC is 18. They just extrapolate it out on the rest of the country because shoehorning an explanation into the script would ruin the flow.
