How does one go about ending suffering? Relieving it? One could become a doctor and help the sick but there would still be violence. Do we have to become more intelligent(perhaps genetic or technological enhancement?)
Even then there is still existential dread. Anyone care to add any thoughts?

Gonna dump sad stuff too feel free to join in
>>
>>24921336

The world's suffering isn't your own suffering. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because some kids in Africa are getting butchered that you can't find happiness in your own life.

I know that. I don't much care about my own suffering rather than how to "solve" the problem ja feel?

Imagine we were able to conjure up any material need. Bam! Cure for cancer. I don't see a way of escaping the torment that is the Munchhausen Trilemma and the various other ways things just don't make sense.
>>
>>24921663
It shouldn't matter to you because caring about those things isn't your purpose. Only people who can't find anything else to do waste their time thinking about that.

I make my own purpose. If I want that to be my purpose then it is. I had this idea of devoting my life to studying biological immortality in hope for answers. I then thought of those who devote their life to helping others through medical work, and how fruitless it feels when suffering seems to have no end.

Hey if I can take it away I feel like I'd have a good understanding of it in case I change my mind. I already don't like most people but they are still just as human as I am. Then again are there levels of consciousness when we look at intelligence? Surely ganbanger Jamal isn't as plagued with moral concundrums and introspective despair. However what control do we have on our overall intelligence? I could study physics 24/7 but I would likely never be Einstein

A desire to "ending suffering" is childish at best and grotesque at worst.

you go with it. suffering is like a river. lay face down in it and let it flow over you. you cant make the river go away.

you cant think your way out of suffering, but you can look it in the face and connect with it.

suffering is like a ball stuck to your hand. if you just hold it there and let it rest, its like its not stuck. but if you try to throw it away, you just hurt your arm.

i dont fucking know anon. life just kinda sucks unless you do something. thinking is doing something. just do things. look at stuff. feel.
existence itself is empty, and asks that we fill it with something.
>>
>>24921967
No, you already have logic to do that. As a logical actor, you must act while avoiding contradiction and futility. The scope of actions that avoid both of those things narrows down more as a person increases in intelligence. So clarity of purpose only comes with intelligence.

In that case, assuming I was in any way smart, should I focus my efforts on immortality first or enhancing my intelligence to achieve the former? That or just study philosophy til I die?
>>
>>24922095
>The scope of actions that avoid both of those things narrows down more as a person increases in intelligence
so intelligence is a set spectrum (and so i spurpose and meaning, and morality since actions that avoid contradiction are wrog)
and intelect is moral. so it is right to kill all the idiots.

this is rhetorical and youre an idiot

do that
you can study philosophy by asking good questions, you dont gotta be an academic or in school to ask good questions.
>>
>>24922216
im not talking Sisyphus
being a being (a human, an anon, a robot, an anything) means that you're imposing forms and functions and context. like an art piece. youre constructing *real* meaning (since the most real anything is in form and function anyways, it's absurd and doesnt even make sense for there to be meaning-in-itself so it shouldnt feel wong that there isnt any) all the time

That's true. Although being able to study philosophy as a mortal would be pretty badass. I just want answers man. I guess I shouldn't chase so fervently something I can't reach. I'll still try but fuck. A friend of mine stated what have him purpose was "the girl" and achieving the American Dream and feeling loved. But why put so much into something that could not be there? That could say no to you?

It doesn't make sense to kill all the idiots unless the smart people are willing to breed to fill in the gap.

The problem now is that things aren't bad enough to make people grow an adapt. But the great thing about humanity is that it grows to make more problems for itself eventually so it's not stuck being eternally complacent until a sudden crisis wipes it out. That's what's happening to bonobos.

>>24922371
all these problems are constructions. we know this, and we still pretend. we try to trick ourselves into making these problems *real* like they exist in the ether of the universe. but thats shit.

what we ought to do is acknowledge that we're pretending and have fun with it. see how it's funny, artful, tragic and beautiful. think of walking, sitting, driving as dance. think of listening to someones aggressive phone conversation as a play, all for us. as some old paint covering some graffiti as a painting. etc.

it's more fun that way. and it makes it easier to play the part of "grocery boy, student, child, parent, friend" and everything with more earnest.

if anyone gets what im sayin, please tell me. i think it makes sense.

>That or just study philosophy til I die?
Philosophy is a meme, why study something that has no substance or application?
You should study practical things like mechanical engineering, chemistry or foreign languages. Knowledge with no application is pointless and a waste of time.
>>
>>24922500
>Knowledge with no application is pointless and a waste of time
nice utilitarian principle there anon, youre pretty good at this. i like how, through philosophizing, you came up with a practical solution to the uility of thought.

I don't really know what to do about the world. I do agree that one should attempt to thwart suffering. I try to be genuinely nice to everyone I meet. But where do you go from there? Do you need to become a political revolutionary? Do you need to find a religion and/or spread it? Do you need to simply try to earn as much power possible and use it benevolently? I'm not quite sure. I studied philosophy four years at uni and I'm still not quite sure.

It makes sense pragmatically. However it could be a search for the ideas that would end suffering. Then again, Perhaps even more than that, I want answers that would satisfy my epistemological and moral doubts. I'm just frustrated that I'm running on a treadmill so there literally is no end. This is also probably me trying to cope with absurdism. Not leaving til it dies but thank you for your time robits
>>

im saying he just demonstrated how philosophy can be useful

he came up with a principle for what knowledge should be kept and persued and what shouldnt

>>24922662
just do what you can
"what you can do" is limited by your desires (if you desire not to do X, you cant do X without some outside force, think Bartleby the Scrivener)

>>24922677
i dont think you got my point about "playing the part"
it's the rhetoric that makes "playing the part" seem pessimistic, but there is no treadmill. its honest, its real

>>24922662
How much would you recommend someone else studying philosophy at uni? You are certainly more well read than I. I feel like we would need to enhance ourselves somehow. However that makes me think of the Great Filter and imagine the destruction a crazed enhanced Einstein could do. I mean he'll we have how many nukes and you are going to tell me there isn't a one unaccounted for?
>>
>>24922754
>I was just referring to how it seemed everything was happening for you
oh oh gotcha
kinda romantic perspective i guess. i dont think i mean it that way though.
>>
>>24922735
>im saying he just demonstrated how philosophy can be useful
And I'm saying he was just using the right words. What he meant to say is "there is no point in speculating on things that can't be applied to reality", but he misused to word "philosophy" as though those two things are equivalent.

>>24922677
"Ending suffering" isn't technically what you should be striving for. Humans have evolved to experience suffering so they avoid certain things, so your real goal should be to eliminate those things because suffering is just a shadow of that.
