Not sure if its known that capt Kirk was one of the original actors on the twilight zone, and his acting on Star Trek seems to remind me of it.
The originals were good because they mixed scifi horror elements, intrigue, love, action and comedy all into one show. Underrated in my opinion (if not a bit campy as well)

Cardassia was a perfectly healthy society up until the changelings started fucking shit up in the alpha quadrant. Their main governmental power was concentrated in the Obsidian Order which was completely wiped out in the Gamma Quadrant, and following this the Klingons were manipulated into attacking a decapitated Cardassia inflicting massive losses.
Before all this, Cardassia was recovering reasonably well from the Federation war and the moral effects of losing control over Bajor.

You have to remember that in the age of the show, humanity has passed a lot of the problems we face today.
They're living the NEET dream. No need to work, no fear of hunger or ridicule. They only strive to improve themselves. Picard said that at the finale of season 1 when they unfroze a drug addict, a mother, and a businessman from the 21st century who were drifting through space in a cryogenics satellite.
Also keep in mind that it is his desire to be more human in image. Really, he just wants to feel the things we do.

This basically. Star Trek showed what humanity could be and what it possible if we got over all the bullshit.
It also showed that despite achieving everything, people still struggled with doing the right thing and dealing with the emotions of it all.
Lastly, a lot of people write it off it as some impossible utopia not realizing that WWIII happened and most of humanity died before it became a "reality."
