The book follows the anime, it's basically the uncensored version of the anime, a naked representation of the true hikikomori. However there are a number of events not shown in the anime or put in different a order such as the church visit, Satou taking drugs etc.
Where the book and the anime have the greatest difference is in how they're told. In the anime we see Satou's antics from mostly an outsiders perspective. In the book however, we actually read his thoughts and see everything from his perspective. It also has the better ending of the three versions, not as super vague and retarded as the manga or as limited as the anime.

It affected me but not that much. I feel really, really, really terrible for not playing it blindly and looking things up in advance. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, and I will most certainly play it through 100% this time and again in a year or two, but I feel like I cheated myself out of something special. I'm also having a genuinely hard time dealing with how invested I became in the characters and the fact that they simply aren't real.
I do the same thing with everything (always have to pause half-way through The Walking Dead and check the episode's plot on Wikipedia). I'm impatient, but at least I felt something.
Just like with NHK (only watched the anime and honestly didn't completely understand the destroying-the-NHK suicide scene) when I first watched it around 2009 I felt this way but it didn't actually motivate me to change my life.

I guess I just didn't experience NHK/KS the way I was supposed to and will never be able to change that. You can't unwatch or unread things. At least I can always experience them again in the future, no? Next time I'll try to pay extra attention. I've never been good at understanding even the shallowest of 'deep' things.

I've written to the author, he's a really nice guy. The novel was written based on his personal experiences as a hiki and in fact he returned to being NEET after publishing and now lives off of royalties. He told me that the contents of it are meant to be more relatable than the reality of the situation. It was kind of personal, about how I related to the story and some other stuff. He responded like I mentioned before with his experiences and how they're ongoing, how the book relates to that, and some nice sincere advice.

Have you guys found other media that makes you feel similar/the same? I played Tsukihime around the same time and got pretty attached to Kohaku.
More recently I played Life is Strange and it wasn't the same but I still sort of got attached to it. I also have The Longest Journey but haven't played much of it even though it's probably really good.
As far as movies go I watched Requiem for a Dream, and I enjoyed it with zero attachment.
