Where my beatmaking robot bros at?

Making synth progressions and chopping loops in FL Studio then bouncing it all out to my SP-303 or SP-404 to chop and play live. Might bounce things out to cassette tape for some saturation and compression if I don't get too lazy about it. Might also try incorporating my Electribe at some point, probably for bass sequences.

I really love all of this and seriously want to get into it. Where should I start though?
>>
>>24874980
Depends what route you want to go... hardware or software. Software is definitely cheapest because you can pirate software but it can be a daunting way to start because of its complexity. I have a hard time not making tracks that sound way too stiff when working exclusively in the computer, which is why I like some external gear.

If you want to invest a bit of money to get going, the roland SP series is a great entrance point. Very basic sequencer, tons of effects, resampling ability. The sampling electribes are also a good option if you've got $400 to put into this and are more geared toward sequencing things out than working with loops like you tend to do with the SP-404 etc.

If you go the software route, a midi keyboard or drum pad makes a world of idfference.
>>
Fl Studio 11.1
>>
>>24875998
working on a grid only really works for me for arrangements so I can't stay in FL too long or things get all stiff and loose any organic feeling. But yeah it's great and super easy to learn.

>Ableton 9, FL10. VST's all goddamn day. Never owned a piece of outboard hardware in my life.

>None. Like I said, I've been out of the saddle for over a year, and the sounds I want to make can easily be achieved with VST's

>I've had several Soundclouds over the years. Here's one from awhile back. All of this was done either in Ableton 8 or FL9 with either the standard plug-ins that came with the DAW's or NI Massive, Absynth, Vanguard, and a couple of other shits I can't remember.

FL 11, Maschine, a lot of pirated VST's. A used 49key midi controller. Normally make chilltrap and the like. Recently got a promo on edm.com and that was sweet

It's relatively easy to get into but the learning curve is a bitch. Most fun thing I've ever attempted doing though
>>

whatever u want bb

you could use analog synths and just hold long chords or set things up with a sequencer. You could do what I do and use shitty thrift store casios and yamaha portasounds through delay and reverb and occasionally overdrive pedals into an RC-3 loop pedal

You could make tape loops by opening cassettes and cutting lengths of tape then record feedback or synth/keyboard/whatever sounds

You could use a guitar with reverb, a long delay, a compressor/sustainer, and feedback from your amp

You could paulstretch things in Audacity and layer tracks with effects then export as an MP3 or WAV.

Or take your Audacity creations and throw them in a DAW

Or any of the above with any DAW. Record chords into Ableton in session view and let it just loop and loop under heavy reverb

You could take the output of a mixer, run it through effects, and then route it back into the mixer with the aux out going to an amp and sculpt the feedback you create by manipulating the EQs on the mixer and changing the parameters of the effects.

Etc.

Experiment with ways of making continuous sound.

nice! If only I could afford all the Elektron gear... actually if I could afford just an Octatrack I'd be thrilled.

My goal for 2016 is to do at least one tape release, submit some demos to small labels, and get on some bills and start playing gigs around town.

Are you self-releasing or is it through a label? What sort of music do you make?

>>
>tfw too ADD to figure out fl studio
>>
>>24877188
i guess you have to love the process or really love the result

i find making music tedious too but i'm becoming increasingly determined to not have a regular job so I feel an increasing sense of urgency as the years go by to be more productive and focused with my music. So I tough it out through the boring parts by focusing on the fact that I want to start playing out and releasing music.
>>
>>24877263
then try something else. FL isn't for everyone. Maybe you need something more tactile
>>
>>24877074
Ayy Octatrack bro. I dig the OT. Was loading up samples earlier actually. Also have the Elektron A4 and RYTM. Nice machines. Love the sequencers and ability to parameter lock.

Also have a Bass Station II and a TT-303
>>
>>24877074
How do you like the Monomachine? I really want to get a powerful FM box, I know the machinedrum has pretty powerful FM capabilities as well.

Though I don't have much money, so i'll probably pick up a yamaha TX81Z for an FM synth.
>>
>>24877415
>TT-303
Sweet. Do you make acid or ghetto tech or something?
>>
>>24877434
It kinda varies. I like making deep house stuff, techno, braindancy stuff, and some downtempo hip hop type beats. I just kinda start without anything in mind really and it just kinda branches off.

I love the 303 sequencer though. It's super easy to program, as it has some additional functionality over the TB-303. Really immediate and fun.

>TX81Z
I got a Yamaha FB-01 for $50... not the best FM module around but great FM bells and some nice pads. A little thin sounding but you can't beat that price. And there is a free software editor for making your own patches.

Overall I recommend it if you can find one and want basic but decent FM synthesis.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqIOTwUjlks
>>
>>24874270
I'M CRAVING EURORACK. One day I'll make some money to start off with a MI Clouds, or MI Braids, or the intellijel shapeshifter.
>>
>>24877476
Nice. I bet you could fatten up the sound on those with some FX.

I constantly see TX81Z's under $100 on craigslist/ebay/reverb and I'm pretty sure there's plenty of software to program them with. As I've heard with most of those yamaha synths made in the 80's - total pain in the dick to program.

I saw a video of DMX krew where he made a pretty cool rhodes emulation on his tx81z. Definitely didn't sound spot on, but I really dig the rhodes sound, so if I can get close enough with one of those, I'd be happy cause it's less than an 1/8 of the price of an actual rhodes.
>>

I tried...

>>
What do you guys think?
https://clyp.it/0us0kc3c
>>
>>24877481
Same, but every time I want to there is always gear I'm more interested in. For the price of the Intellijel + a case and PSU you could get an actual SH101 in decent shape.
>>
>>24877567
Thanks man. I don't have an floppies for the mpc, so it is just on the sp 303. The sounds are the harmonics from the start of spiderland.
>>
>>24877625
Intellijel Atlantis*
>>
>>24877551
Not bad, especially for so quick. Add some bass, even if it just means figuring out what key that sample is and adding some sub sine wave bass to tail your kicks.

>>24877587
I love it, nostalgic and vaguely videogamey but also atmospheric. I was expecting the bass to hit harder on the drop and throughout. Some compression or even just boosting your sub-bass might do you good. I feel like your
kick needs to knock harder too. It's barely there, really. Get something a little punchier or EQ/compress what you've got.

Sidechaining some of the melodic elements to that kick drum might let it punch through the mix better too.

Excellent track though. Well put together, just needs some mixing touch-ups.
>>
>>24877625
I would definitely love a 101, but idk if they're worth a grand, since they regularly go for that price.

I'm more interested in the workflow in eurorack, using patch cables and not being able to save anything. I think that would help me understand & experiment with synthesis more. Plus, I could sequence it with my Elektron A4
>>
>>24877587
I like it, but think the drums at the start sound kind of... cheap?
>>
>>24877644
The atlantis looks sweet. It's loosely based on the 101 though. As it has 2 VCO's i believe? and 2 oscillators. The BSII i have will have to fit the bill for a monosynth for now.
>>
>>24877587
Nice. Here's one I made earlier today. It's more of a fuck around and really rough and i just decided to record it live. I also can't figure out how to get my shit to record in decent quality. Everything sound lofi and 1000x better in my headphones or monitors.

Nice work senpai. I started producing dnb and idm. It's hard because there is so much to learn. For example now I can't do the effects I want and it really frustrates me. It's hard to keep motivated when you dont sound like the pros you want to emulate.
>>
>>24877659

>>
>>24877654
Base has been a sticking point for me as I never really find anything that I can sample. I guess I need a keyboard or something.
>>
>>24877738
Check out single cycle waveforms. I've been messing around with them lately, have a short hold, and quickish release on the envelope and with some filtering you can get some real nice snappy bassline sounds, or long droney bassline sounds, depending on how you want to use them.

There's even a free waveform pack called Adventure Kid Waveforms....I think?
>>
>>24877738
If you use FL, just open any simple sound - a kick for instance - in edison, zoom in as far as you can and chop a sine wave. Fuck with pitch and you can make a quick sub.

Or even simpler use 3xOsc.
>>
>>24877587
I know what you're trying to do here, but's just too much.
Give the tune a bit of space to breathe, it feels heavy right now and that goes completely against the general vibe of it.
Even in the sections where you try opening the tune up, you're still way too heavy.

Give this a listen, if you haven't already:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUX4OMkSRpI

Pay attention to how the middle section still has some breathing room, despite being a near complete wall of sounds.
Maybe put something like that snare thing at 0:41 somewhere into your tune to open it up a bit more.

Watch tons of tutorials on youtube. You will need to put hundreds of hours to learn

- mixing knowledge
- composing techniques

It takes so damn much time when you start from scratch.

I was playing around in composition/tablature programs like TuxGuitar for a while, using the weird compression artifacts(?) that result from converting certain MIDI sounds to MP3 to make Tim Hecker-tier Drone/Ambient. I kind of got lazy and stopped, mastering it properly is a massive pain in the cunt and I'm too poor to afford myself a decent DAW and MIDI controller setup, much less any sort of samplers and the like.
