There's a reason why everyone here shittalks reddit/tumblr/9gag/funnyjunk/etc. It's because they're all shit. As hard as it is to believe, they're actually even shittier than 4chan. It's not even a meme to immediately bash them, because they actually deserve bashing.
I visit specific subs. Small subs on Reddit isn't all that different than this place, it just doesn't have people throwing out nigger and faggot all the time. The front page and defaults are places that you really want to avoid though.

I went there once to see it it's was that awful and I didn't even understand how to use the site, the design is shit.
Also I can't back to non anonymous forums.
I use reddit for porn and that's it. For once, the upboat system is nice; only the good stuff gets to the top.
Other than that, the site is trash.
I really think there is nothing wrong with reddit, people on there get just as strange as people on 4chan do. I don't understand the dislike of reddit.

If you look past politics and go into hobbyist subreddits where peoples personal politics don't really matter, reddit takes an explosive diarrhea shit on 4chan so yes it is a better "source of mind-opening discussion".
Karmawhoring is a bad thing in the larger subreddits but it's a good incentive in the smaller subreddits and the fact that your posts won't disappear in a few hours actually makes people put more effort into them. Meanwhile 4chan's ephemerality coupled with the fact that the only way to get attention is to "(You)whore" makes for an experience where everyone is either desperately shitposting/memeing for attention or acting aloof and too cool.
The more popular a board gets the closer it gets to it's own /b/ification.
Reddit's better for finding information but the community is shit. If you want real discussions 4chan's the place to go.

4chan has way too much shitposting but real conversation is possible and occasionally (against the odds) takes place, unlike reddit where it is literally impossible to do anything other than perform for the approval of the mob.
It would be a better site if it were possible to make subreddits with comment voting turned off entirely so that you could have actual conversations with people, but they haven't done that so you can't
