It's ambiguous, because the movie is from his point of view, and he can't separate the delusions from reality, but I can recognize how implausible it is that the president takes a taxi ride in the middle of the night in the middle of a dump.
Plus I know that hallucinations of Jesus or the president are common in schizos, and Travis clearly has some issues, so I consider that more likely.

There is a ton of media dealing with alienation, isolation, and the like, the the specific notions perpetuated by the trash on this board are not venerated by anyone with any real influence so there isn't any real "robot" media- because nobody wants to read or watch the story of a pathetic autist striving to get on welfare.

There is no real set definition of what it is to be "robot" but that doesn't mean there aren't themes and ideas popularly attributed to it that we can recognize, compare, and contrast between the different depictions of robothood, and pieces of media deemed to depict robothood.

If they did he wouldn't have been able to hallucinate the news clips describing him as a hero. Unless the director wanted us to think that we were hallucinating along with Travis...no they didn't kill him. The twist was that Travis was on the verge of being a lone wolf assasin but because he got tangled up with thug life that confused the fuck out of investigators looking at the case and the loli lied on his behalf and hence he was elevated to white knight vigilante hero.

It was not all over the news that day. There was an article in the paper the next day with a picture of him WITHOUT the mohawk. The incident with the polition wasn't that serious, they chased someone who hadn't even brandished a weapon. NYC is huge and nobody would ever expect a potential assasin of a politician to suddenly decide and kill a few thugs that night. Nobody would make that correlation, they'd just think he slipped back into the shadows or something. Maybe one in 5,000 people had a mohawk in NYC in the 1970s which means every damn 30 minutes someone will see one or more mohawks walking down the street.
Even if they did catch up to him he didn't commit any crimes except "reaching for something" which isn't an offence.
