Dreams.
You know how we have "universal" dreams? Like how almost everyone has had one of the major nightmares at some point in their life
--Teeth falling out (fear of losing your power)
--Death (fear of the unknown and loss)
--Being chased (fear of something specific, especially if you can't get away in your dream)
--Fighting and your punches are in slow motion or you can't hurt the opponent (multiple interpretations, none of them positive)
--Naked in a public place (fear of embarrassment, fear of rejection)
--Unprepared for something like taking a test for a class you didn't know you were in, singing a song and you can't remember the words (fear that you're not good enough, fear of failure)
The fact that almost everyone has these same exact dreams means something. In my story there's a universal consciousness directing us to improve ourselves through our dreams and some people are trying to fight back and take control of their subconscious from the outsiders. Their dreams become more and more terrifying the more they fight back.
Literally everyone I've told the idea to has been like "oh so it's like Nightmare on Elm Street then?" NO IT'S NOT REEEEEEEEEEEEE
Anyways, I'm a shit writer so it's not coming out that great but I just FEEL like it's a good idea. I dunno, I'll keep at it, it's not like I have anything else to do.

If you want some books on writing: Story Structure Architect by Victoria Schmidt is damn good, and easy to read. It's mostly about the plot and characters. On Writing Well by William Zinsser, and The Elements of Style by William Strunk are more about the act of writing.
